I am now in Scotland following up my Merrilees ancestors and intending to visit the Cambusnethan cemetery in less than 2 weeks time. How do you fit into the Merrilees picture?

I cannot tell you any more about Mary Crawford, but she was possibly my GGG grandmother. It seems that I am descended from Peter Munro her son. He is said to have been born at Auchagoyle, Glassary 24 July 1811. He married Sarah (nee McGlashan) born Feoline, and all their children were born in Glassary from 1841 to 1853. Mary Munro b 16 July 1843 married Neil McFadyen from the Isle of Mull and they emigrated to New Zealand in 1877 with their first three children, all born in Glasgow. Peter Munro died 4 January 1872 at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow.

I have just been seeking information about the parish of Glassary (and came across your message) because I am coming to Scotland for an extended visit in July 2012. I hope to see the places where my ancestors lived.

I have found my way to the new section. The first named people are my family and I expect many of the others will be connected. I knew about the Napier marriage, but not about the death of the child. No, there didn't seem to be a David in the immediate family. I think Alex must have moved away, he may also have emigrated, but he didn't come to New Zealand, although an Aunt of Helen Merrilees did come, but to the North Island and I think prior to her niece. The different spellings are numerous. I am inclined to ignore them. Even within my New Zealand family we have made some minor changes as the surname has become a given name.

I am planning my itinerary now for my extended Scotland visit from July 2012 and will definitely visit the cemetery. Having the plot numbers will be so helpful. Have you any suggestions as to the best people to contact to try to locate Trotter Bank when I arrive? I think where you are describing is around where I was looking on Google maps.

I am overwhelmed by the fact that a stranger in another country can take so much time to provide information for others. This is the second such experience I have had.

Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I think that Alexander Merrilees could be an uncle of the Alex I am seeking. He was a young person in the letters I have from the 1880s. I need to check my tree information for more details. Both parents were also still alive and working the orchard at that time.

It is great to know that I can find so many links. Having ancestors with an uncommon name seems to make tracing them easier, but I have learned not to jump to premature conclusions. I am especially hoping that I can find the location of the Trotter Bank orchard. There seems to be a possibility in the Overtown direction near the junction of the road to Law. Is that possible?

I am intrigued by this correspondence. I am a Beattie descendant with John Beattie, my g grandfather being born in Roberton c 1810. He lived at Contin and at Poolewe before emigrating to New Zealand with seven family members in 1861. Recently when doing family research I was puzzled by the use of Jane Irvine twice (in the late 1800s) in family names with no link being known. Since then the marriage of Rachael Beattie to an Irvine has been mentioned, but I am unsure whether we have any connection to Rachael Beattie. However the Roberton and Contin links suggest this could be so. Do you have any more information about Rachael?

The John Beattie I am referring to married Elizabeth Elliott, also with southern ancestry (Westerkirk, Jamestown) but along with other Elliott family members she later lived in Contin and the Jane irvine name is also found in Elliot descendants.

I was looking through Cambusnethan records as I wanted to visit the area when I come to Scotland in 2012 and then I saw the message - you were enquiring about my family! My great grandmother was Helen Hamilton Merrilees, b about 1858 daughter of Agnes and William Merrilees. Robert, who apparently disappeared was her brother. Other family members were Margaret (Maggie), Agnes m Miller and Alex. Helen married Dr Patrick Fletcher and emigrated to New Zealand c 1875. I have family letters spanning nearly 20 years from the 1870s to the 1890s. They were all written from Maggie, Agnes and Alex from Trotter Bank which appears to have been the name of their orchard. I know from their letters quite a bit about their orchard and their relatives, many of whom died of lung diseases at quite young ages. I know that the sisters married, but I lost track of Alex who ceases to appear in census records. I would be interested to know if anyone has information on him and possible descendants. I did not have the death dates for the parents so that is new information for me.

I went to the Merrilees world clan gathering in Dunedin, New Zealand, a few years ago and met the Canadian descendants of Robert. I assume his wife must have emigrated to Canada with their children after he disappeared. According to my letters he was a ship's engineer and when they hadn't heard for a long time they assumed he was lost  at sea. I have seen other suggestions.

It is so exciting to have family information jump out from the screen in such an unexpected way. I hope to hear from you.
