Essex / Re: Old pubs in Newport

Thank you for your reply milliepede, it gives me some more to go on. The pub I remember was just across a small green, which if I remember right , had a red phone box on it. The pub itself was just a one bar pub, but for the life of me I can't remember it name. This was in 1965/66 .

Hello, can anyone tell me if there used to be a pub on Elephants Green in Newport please? I'm thinking in the 1960s.
Thank you,
Christine.

Tyrone / Re: Castlederg Parish, HARPUR

Thank you, Elwyn, Glensman and kingkerswell for your quick replies. I'm sorry I'm late getting back to you, but have had a family crisis and have only just looked at my messages.
Yes, Isabella's fathers name was definately Samuel Harpur, but if what you say Elwyn about those distroyed records, then it seem likely that I'm not going to be able to find the right birth.
Many thanks to you all, and I'm sure I will keep "dipping into" the research sites from time to time, just in case!

Chris.

Tyrone / Castlederg Parish, HARPUR

I am trying to locate a birth record for Isabella Harpur. She married Andrew Monteith in the Church of Ireland Parish church in Castlederg on the 7th April 1891. Her fathers name is Samuel Harpur, and she was living in Ganvaghan. According to the 1901 and 1911 census, she was born c.1861-66.
But after scrolling through all the usual sites, I just can't find a birth for an Isabella with a father Samuel in the Tyrone area.
Can anyone offer any suggestions please?

Chris.

I couldn't find anything on SEAX, but then I'm not very competent with these on-line sites-must be my age!
However, I've just e-mailed Essex records office, so see how I get on there.

Thanks.

Essex / Saffron Walden newspapers circa 1960's

Could anyone tell me how to access reports from  the Saffron Walden newspapers of the 1960's?
I am trying to find any reports of a court case ( held in Saffron Walden ) regarding an assault on a teenage girl in 1954/55.
I tried e-mailing the head office for the Saffron Walden Reporter, but didn't get any reply.

If someone could point me in the right direction, thank you.

Chris.

Yes, we can only hazard a guess as to what those men went through.

It's no wonder they didn't talk much about what happened, and we have only so much to go on in trying to find out now about their service.

RedRoger,

Thanks, thats interesting. Ithought this might happen as I've read through some of the war diaries for his regiment, and there is very often mention of some officers going "off strength" to leave in England, and then coming back to the unit. My man was a C/Sjt, so its possible I suppose that he did get home at some point.
