I am sure you are right about there being two john Moodys, one at Cullyvenny and one at Ballymoney. My John Moody is listed as a blacksmith in Ballymoney as early as 1846, and as you say, the two appear in their respective locations in Griffiths Valuation. Based on his age at death, it seems my John Moody was born circa 1803. That puts him in a timeframe that could make him the brother of Matthew of Cullyvenny. We have a number of pieces of evidence to suggest the connection between Mathew at Cullyvenny and John at Ballymoney. The fact that Matthew's Will dated Sept. 5th 1860 names John Moody blacksmith of Ballymoney as an executor of his estate is the clearest connection. It is significant that my great great grandparents, Mary Moody and David Reid Cathcart were married at Cullybackey in June 1868 by Rev. Joseph Archibald Moody. Also the witnesses to the marriage were Jane Moody, Mary's sister, and James Galloway. This James must surely have been the one who married Matthew Moody's daughter Mary in 1850. There is also the fact that John Moody of Ballymoney named one of his sons Joseph. I guess we need to compare all the references we can find for the two John Moodys.
I have just found a reference to Matthew's son, Robert John Moody, still being in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia in 1902. Joseph Archibald Moody's Will of Jan. 8 1898 gives that place as Robert's address. It seems Robert had a son Robert who was in the New Zealand Army during the Boer War. I live just fifteen minutes from Castlemaine, so will do some checking.

Hello Aghadowney,

Thanks for the reply to my post. I have been gathering information on John Moody and his family for a while, but had only just picked up on the postings about Matthew and Mary. I have now obtained the marriage certificate for Robert John Moody which states that he is the son of MATTHEW MOODY and MARY ARCHIBALD. He was a bachelor aged 32 when he married Isabella Fenton, spinster, aged 19. The marriage was by licence and was on the 7th of August 1863 at Christ Church, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. While the church is 'Church of England', Robert and Isabella give their own denomination as Presbyterian. Robert gives his occupation as Miner, and his place of residence as 'Carngham'. His birthplace is hard to read, but looks like 'Cullencarney', Coleraine, County Derry. His father's occupation is 'Farmer'. Isabella Fenton's birthplace is Glasgow, Scotland.

I see that Robert John Moody is named in his father's Will, as is Thomas James Moody and Joseph Archibald Moody. I see that Matthew Moody of Cullyvenny died 20th November 1860 aged 65 years.

My great great grandparents David Reid Cathcart and Mary Moody were married at the Meeting House, Cullybackey, County Antrim, on the 23rd of June 1868. The officiating minister was the Reverend Joseph Archibald Moody. The witnesses were, James Galloway and Jane Moody. Mary Moody was the daughter of John Moody of Ballymoney, blacksmith (c1803-1871) and Jane Cathcart (c1803-1861). Mary Moody had siblings, John Cathcart Moody (c1838-1927), Jane Moody (1841-1900), and Joseph Moody (c1846?). This brother Joseph apparently also became a minister. I have just come upon a number of posts on the web linking John Moody blacksmith of Ballymoney with Matthew Moody. One states that Matthew of Cullyvenny, County Londonderry, had John Moody of Ballymoney as an executor of his Will. It seems likely that Matthew and John were brothers.
