Oh brother. Sorry. You gave me Rose's parents. Knee-jerk. I did have all of the dates you provided, but for Oliver and Frances' marriage date. I have her birth at 1813 which now does not seem likely. Truly, I've done only a cursory search for these folks. I may abandon it now pending more data to make connections. Sigh.

Well. The bastard son was using his father's surname? I wonder who Rose's parents were. I cannot fathom that all these Ewhurst and nearby Crouches were not related somehow.

I forgot to mention how I connect. George CROUCH b1824 Bodiam is my 3x great grandfather.

My main interest, though I've adopted all lines, is in CROUCH. Elizabeth CROUCH 1840-1915 Ewhurst m1861 Henry BRYANT 1842-1914 s/o William BRYANT and Elizabeth HAYLER. William was s/o William BRYANT and Mary KEMP. AS you will be aware, this William was s/o James and Hannah.

I have been working to prove that Elizabeth CROUCH's father Oliver 1808-1985 was a sibling of George CROUCH b1805. George's parents were John CROUCH b1764 and Mary VIDLER b ca 1765. George was their 9th child as far as I have been able to determine.

On the 1851 census Ewhurst, Oliver CROUCH and George CROUCH live side-by-side.

Sussex / Dadswell family mystery SOLVED
« on: Tuesday 20 December 11 11:33 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to some very giving and thoughtful folks here, my family mystery concerning the Dadswells has been (mostly) solved.

When my gggmother came to Canada with her husband, they brought with them a boy age 14 named William Henry. He used the Beeney surname in Canada but we always knew he was not related.

I had found his marriage doc and learned he had given his second middle name as Dadswell and listed his parents as Sarah and John Beeney.

I later found that in 1901 a Daniel Dadswell was residing with the Beeneys as a boarder. John Beeney worked for the railroad. When another poster here mentioned a Dadswell with a connection to the railroad, it grabbed my attention and I began posting.

What I've been given from the censuses and a Dadswell one-surname database shows that Daniel's daughter Ellen gave birth to a child out of wedlock - William Henry. On the 1911 census, he is in the Beeney household and listed as adopted.

While we still don't know why the Beeneys adopted him, we at least now know some of his background and history, how he came to their attention, and can appreciate the similarities between Ellen's circumstance and Sarah's - both gave birth to children out of wedlock in the Union Workhouse.

Many thanks to everyone who helped solve this mystery!

CaroleW, yes, most Canadian BMDs list parents. Of course, everyone I look for is covered by those left over after most is used up. On William Henry Dadswell Beeney's marriage record, he lists his adoptive parents, John Beeney and Sarah (Crouch) Beeney.
