Lancashire / Re: Elon Musk's Liverpool Ancestors
« on: Thursday 22 May 25 12:44 BST (UK)  »
I have done a fair bit of research on the Robinsons, as I have many in my tree, so was wondering if I might have been distantly related to Elon -- sadly not.  I was hoping a genealogy magazine would publish this info, but they dont seem interested, so I produce it here:

Cora Amelia Robinson was born in 1923 in Liverpool, her parents being John Robinson, a stonemason from Liverpool, and Bregchie Elizabeth Theron from South Africa, who married in 1911 in Pretoria. John had emigrated to South Africa in 1910, but they must have returned to the UK soon after their first child Levi Robinson was born in about 1912, and had four further children in Liverpool, including Cora. Cora returned to South Africa with her mother and married Walter Musk, the grandfather of Elon. She died in 2011 in South Africa.

John Robinson’s parents were Levi Robinson and Matilda Marsh who married in 1878 in Walton, Liverpool aged 19 so born about 1859, the father mentioned as a Edward Marsh. This Matilda Marsh, according to many trees on Ancestry, was the daughter of Edward Marsh and Emma Cadwallader.  But I could not find a birth record or baptism for Matilda.  I found them on the 1871 census, with a John Henry Marsh aged about two years as a brother of Matilda. I found that strange, that they had Matilda in about 1859 then John Edward in about 1869, so a gap of about ten years between siblings.  The GRO births listed a possible John Henry Marsh born in 1869 in the right area, but the mother’s maiden name was Kilgour.

I did a search on FindMyPast for a Marsh and Kilgour marriage but without success.  Then I searched just using Emma Kilgour’s name for a marriage and found a record: in 1859 a Edward Powell had married Emma Kilgour in Manchester. I checked the GRO births for the surname Powell with mother’s maiden name Kilgour and I discovered three births including Matilda.  I then found Matilda Powell’s baptism in 1860.

Edward Powell appeared to have changed his name to Edward Marsh on the 1861 Census, after the baptism of Matilda.  I also found three further Marsh births including John Henry Marsh. I‘ve yet to find out why the family changed their surname.

I also researched the Edward Marsh who married Emma Cadwallader in 1859.  They did have a daughter called Lizzie Matilda Marsh born in 1862 in Oswestry, Shropshire, and she married Edward Hughes in 1887.

So it is easy to be mislead when searching for possible marriages and only one comes up that appears to match.  But in this case due to a surname change it was missed, and about 112 trees on Ancestry have the wrong parents of this Matilda Marsh, the great great grandmother of Elon Musk, who was born Matilda Powell.  42 mention Emma Cadwallader.  I found only one tree that mentioned Emma Kilgour.

I mentioned earlier about Matilda Marsh (born Matilda Powell) marrying Levi Robinson in 1878.  Levi was the father of John Robinson the stonemason who emigrated to South Africa to marry Bregchie Elizabeth Theron, whose daughter Cora Amelia Robinson married into the Musk family.  On Levi’s and Matilda’s marriage certificate, Levi is a Smith, which I think is a Ship Smith, and his father is William Robinson, a Gardener.  On the 1871 census Levi and his father William are living in Birkenhead with his mother Sarah, with Levi aged 13 born in Mowcop, Cheshire.   But I could not find them before 1871, which made me wonder whether there was another surname change – and it seems there was!

Searching for Levi Robinson’s baptism around 1858 with father William Robinson and mother Sarah produced very little that appeared correct.  However, dropping the surname gave me a possible record: a Levi Duckworth baptized in Mowcop, parents William Duckworth and Sarah. I was then able to find Levi Duckworth (transcribed as Duckwood?) and family on the 1861 census located in Mow Cop.  The GRO birth records revealed a Levi Duckworth birth registered in the first quarter of 1858 in Congleton, Cheshire with mother’s maiden name Thorley.  I found in the marriage indexes William Duckworth’s marriage to Sarah Thorley in 1854.

So William Duckworth appears to have changed his surname to William Robinson after the 1861 census.  I found a newspaper entry in the Cheshire Observer and General Advertiser dated 6 April 1861 whence a William Robinson was sentenced to one month’s hard labour for Bigamy, no futher details given.  There is also a marriage index record in the first quarter of 1861 for a William Robinson and Sarah Duckworth at Burnley Register Office in 1861.  Whether it’s the same William and Sarah, I don’t know…

Levi Duckworth/Robinson had the following siblings:
James Duckworth 1855-1855; James Duckworth/Robinson 1856-1934 who married Jane Hilton; Hannah Duckworth 1860- and Joseph Robinson 1865-.

William Duckworth was born about 1831 in Brereton, Cheshire and occupations were Collier and Coal Miner; William Robinson was born about 1831 in Broxton Heath (Brereton Heath?), Cheshire and occupation was a Gardener.  Not to be confused with another William Robinson born about 1826 in Eastham, Cheshire, and also a Gardener…

Levi Musk’s English family tree is a real puzzle in places; with some surname changes thrown in, it’s not the easist tree to research, and I can see see why some folk have gone down a certain route without checking actual facts.

Antrim / Re: Who was Sarah Henry or Gracey??

Hello and thanks for all the help and info.

That James Henry buried in 1972 appears to be Robert and Susan's son.  He actually went to USA with his sister Adelaide in 1927, and I can see him on the 1930 US Census in Richmond NY.  He must have come back to Ireland.  It looks like Adelaide married in 1932 to James Tripoli.

This might be Eliza Henry's birth:

1866 Irish Birth Record: College? No.4, Belfast, County Antrim: Page 358/02286835 No.180:
Twenty Eighth December 1866 Belfast Work house  unknown  female  Mo Sarah Gracey  informant J Watt Master of the Belfast Work house  registered Fourth January 1867.

Though I see on the 1901 & 1911 Census she was born in County Down...

Antrim / Who was Sarah Henry or Gracey??
« on: Saturday 07 December 24 13:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm interested in these people listed in the 1901 Irish Census:

1901 Irish Census: 11 Gaffkin Street, Belfast, Antrim:
Sarah Henry family head Presbyterian R&W 60/1841 widow B Co Down.
Eliza Henry daughter Presbyterian R&W 28/1873 Weaver cotton single B Co Down.

Robert Henry son Presbyterian R&W 36/1865 Yarn-dresser married B Co Down.
Susan Henry daughter in law Presbyterian R&W 30/1871 Weaver cotton married B Co Down.
Minnie Henry grand daughter Presbyterian R&W 10/1891 Scholar single B Co Antrim.
Susan Henry grand daughter Presbyterian R&W 8/1893 Scholar single B Co Antrim.
Sarah Henry grand daughter Presbyterian R 6/1895 Scholar single B Co Antrim.
Lilly Henry grand daughter Presbyterian 4/1897 single B Co Antrim.
Florance Henry grand daughter 2/1899 single B Co Antrim.
James Henry grand son Presbyterian 6months/1900 single B Co Antrim.

This Robert Henry I believe married Susanna/Susan Davison/Davidson in 1886 Belfast. His father on the marriage record was a Waltham Henry. They are listed on the 1911 Irish Census living at 17 Eccles Street, Shankill, Antrim, with their 11 children, But Robert is calling himself Robert Samuel Henry...

I believe I have found Sarah Henry his mother and Eliza Henry in the 1911 Irish Census:

1911 Irish Census: 19 Orkney Street, Shankill, Antrim:
Eliza Henry head of family Presbyterian R&W 45/1866 Damask Weaver single B Co Down.
Sarah Gracey mother Presbyterian 76/1835 single B Co Down.

Sarah Gracey died in 1918 at 8 Orkney Street, Belfast aged 84/1834. There are two records (one crossed out) which indicate she may have been the widow of a W Gracey.  The informant was a Susan Henry of 33 Eccles Street.  I have not found her burial.

S Gracey was the informant at two of the births of Robert & Susan Henry: Mary Jane/Minnie in 1890 and Anne Elizabeth/Lily in 1897.

Some of Robert & Susan's children emigrated to the USA in the 1920's.

I cannot find any trace of Eliza Henry; nor Robert and Susan Henry.  Maybe they went to USA also?

The best birth record I can find for Robert Henry is this:

1864 Irish Birth: Pontzpas, Newry, County Armagh: Page 921/02318578 No.89:
Twenty Second November 1864 Kilrea  Robert Wilham?  male  Fa John Henry, Farmer, Kilrea  Mo Sarah Henry formerly Dillon  informant John Henry Kilrea Father  registered May Third 1865.

Best wishes,
Paul.

Hello,
I have a postcard with an address clearly written on it in pencil, but on careful inspection, I can see extremely faint writing, that appears light brown in places, but so faint as to be invisible unless you angle the card into the light.  I believe this postcard was given to my mother by her putative father, and was probably stored with other letters etc by her mother until her death in 1976.  So I was wondering if there was any technique to determining what the hidden writing is.   Other than the address mentioned, the postcard appears to be unused.
Best wishes,
Paul.

Hi Craig,
Thanks for that info.  I was just on FindMyPast and found that record.  Still not sure why we have this SWB.  Possibly a friend of the family back then, as I know Walton Lane and we did have some relations not far from there.  I know my grandad lived off Cherry Lane which is close to Walton Lane.
Best wishes and thanks again.
Paul.

Hi,
Apologies to those readers who saw my last incorrect message.

I have in my possession a Silver War Badge with the number RN3246, which I thought belonged to my grandad William Kelly.  Checking Ancestry records, I see it comes up with a Phillips F?  O.N. J.46794  Rating Ord. Sea., issued 3rd November 1916.  I have no idea who this person is, or why we have it in our possession.  Can someone confirm I am on the right track so I don't go wasting my time seaching for this man?
Thanks, Paul.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Trying to find my Mum's unknown Father.
« on: Wednesday 07 April 21 12:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi scotmum,

Thanks for that info.  DNA Colour Clustering seems to be for close matches (2nd-3rd cousins).  But I only have four 2nd-3rd cousins listed on my Ancestry DNA, of whom I know which side they are on, along with only one 3rd-4th cousin who I suspect is on my unknown Mum's Father's side, who has not responded to my email.  The majority are 4th-6th cousins (44 of them), of which 16 are possibles on my Mum's Father's side.  The rest of my 450+ matches are classed as distant cousins by Ancestry.

Paul.

Hello All and thanks for the info.

I do have access to my Mum's FTDNA, and have started looking at the matches again.  I have amended my Ancestry profile to include a note about her.  I have used the colour coding of matches on Ancestry DNA and there is a tree online there for public view.  I'll also take a look at Gedmatch as well as MyHeritage.  Thanks again.

Paul.
