Thank you for your reply.

I had hit a bit of a brick wall. I had assumed that George and William were brothers as George had a daughter Amelia, as did William and I am sure they had a sister Amelia who I just can't find the baptism of. If they were non conformist that might explain it as I am sure I have read that the records of non conformist churches were not always kept as well as conformist churches.

I have had a look, but  can you tell me how I found out who the submitter was, I am sure it is very obvious but I couldn't see it.

Thanks for your help

Sue

Can anyone help?

Sarah Ellen Roper was my Grandmother's cousin who I think went to South Africa on 23rd July 1920 from Southampton bound for Cape Town.

Family tell me that Sarah Ellen was a Missionary, I  have an entry which suggests that she came home in 1959 and  sailed back to South Africa on 6th August 1959 from Southampton to Durban.  Ship: Pretoria Castle.
The address she gave for England was c/o Mucklow, 24 Hereford Rd., Mon.
She held a SA passport, was a teacher and single.

At this stage she was well in her 70's and it would seem that she became South African citizen.

I am looking for anyone who may know what she did in the years between 1920 and 1959 or wher I can get information regarding her missionary work

Hi Susan
Yes she born on 25 November 1888.

If she sailed in 1959 that means she must have come back to England at some point after she originally departed in 1920.

if you have further details of that sailing,  I would be grateful.

Sorry but I am new to this, you suggested posting a message on the South Africa board, is this on the Roots web site?

regards

Sue

Thank you Nemo for your reply.

I have e-mailed the Pietermaritzburg Archives Repository to see if they can give me any more details, but it does look as if it is my Sarah Ellen.

I can find no marriage or death for her in the Uk, so I do think she probably died in South Africa

Thank you for your help

I wonder if anyone out there can help me?

Miss Sarah Ellen Roper was 31yrs old when she sailed from Southampton to Cape Town, South Africa to work as a Missionary on 23rd July 1920.

I wonder if anyone knows where the missionary records are kept, which might tell me whether she returned to England or stayed in South Africa.

Her last known address was in Halesowen when she was in attendance at the death of her Grandmother Hannah Roper in 1918

Look forward to hearing from anyone who can help me.
