Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Timoteo Barella marries Jane Humphreys in 1860

Hi Eliza B,
We cannot be sure why Timoteo returned to Italy but we can offer a couple of suggestions based on the records.  Firstly his wife Jane died 19 Feb 1870 aged only 36 years old of tuberculosis, leaving him with three children.  In the 1871 Census his is living with the children and his widowed aunt, Appolina wife of the late Clement.  The next available record in the UK is the proving of his will in 1883 giving his date of death as 8 Mar 1874.  I have confirmed that fact with the Italian records which show that he died at the home of his sister Adelaide.  We know therefore that he left England sometime between 1871 and 1874.
So the reasons why he left?  One possibility is that he was brokenhearted at the loss of his wife and went back to Italy to be with his siblings.  Another is that he was seriously ill and went "home' to die.  Neither option can be confirmed as the cause of death was never recorded and it is highly unlikely that there was ever a headstone erected.
Regards  Joe

HI Kelly,

Timoteo Barella was my paternal grandmother's grandfather and i have been able to find documented evidence of his background.  The Barella family are believed to have arrived in Italy from Switzerland and initially settled in Garzeno, a village close to the border between the two countries.  Some time later a member of the family moved further down the valley and settled in Germasino, closer to Lake Como.

The first recorded ancestor was Ambrogio Barella who had a son Clemente who married Maria Camota in Germasino.  They had 5 children one of whom was Giuseppe, born 10 January 1800.  Giuseppe married Caterina Borelli on 21 February 1820 in Germasino and they had six children the eldest of whom was Timoteo.  Timoteo was baptised Timoteo Ippolito Sinforiano Barella, these being the names of the three saints whose feast days were his date of birth.

We do not know why  Timoteo came to England although he was working with his Uncle Clement as a jeweller.  Many other Barellas left Italy and there is a significant branch of the family in Holland where they were barometer makers.  Remembering that Italy did not exist as a country until 1872 there was also the possibility that locals were being conscripted into the Austro Hungarian army to fight against other 'Italian" districts.

Hope this helps - I have given you the direct line names but I also have details of the various siblings as well.  I was fortunate in making contact with a current resident of Germasino who has done a lot of research on the local families.

Best wishes

Joe

As you can see from my earlier post, I too am a descendant of the Barellas through my paternal grandmother.  If you can let me know where your connection is then I can pass on what I know.  Whilst I may not have a record of your father I will most certainly have details of your Barella grandparent.

Marriage certificate clearly states farmer.  Have been trying to imagine how a geordie would interpret an Italian saying 'farmer' and I think you may have  a point!  It certainly ties in withthe occupation of other Barellas arriving from That part of Como.

For Bryant: happy to share information on the north eastern Barella family.

Hi - I am new to Rootschat but signed up when this thread appeared on a Google search.

My grandmother's grandfather was the Timothy Barella that married Jane Humphreys.  Jane was indeed born in Sunderland, the daughter of Thomas Humphreys and Charlotte Rutherford.  Charlotte re-married after Thomas died to a Matthew Rogan in Carlisle.  Matthew Rogan was a travelling merchant.

I have been trying to trace the Italian ancestry of the Barella family so I am very interested in the source of the information on the death of Timothy in Germasino.  It certainly would explain why I have never been able to find a record of his death in the UK.  I also see via the web that an Ambrogio Barella is reputed to have been born 27 Sep 1828 in Gravedonna or Germasino but no sources are quoted.

My research indicates a possible alternative pedigree for Timothy.  In the 1871 census Timothy is residing with his 3 children and his aunt Appolina.  Jane, his wife, had died 19 Feb 1870 from Phthsis Pulmonalis at their home in Durham City.  The aunt was the wife of Clement Barella and they were married in 1852 when she was 44 and he was 47.  The marriage certificate states that Clement's father was also Clement, a farmer.

It is safe to assume that Timothy's father and Clement were brothers.  In his marriage certificate in 1860 Timothy's father is given as Joseph Barella, a jeweller.  My conclusion was therefore that Clement had at least 2 sons, Joseph and Clement.

I realise that this contradicts the lineage of Giovanni Battista given in this thread but maybe there is a generation missing?

Grateful for any response to this message
