Lanarkshire / Janet Bell Born Cambuslang 1821
« on: Wednesday 21 January 15 05:29 GMT (UK)  »
Janet Bell was born 1 April 1821 to John Bell and Ann/Agnes Liddell in Kirkhill, Cambuslang.   Janet was one of 10 children and I have managed to trace all of her siblings including her sibling Jane/Jean. In the 1841 census she is still living with her parents and sister Jane/Jean.

A great many researchers have gone onto assume that she was the Janet Bell who in Cambuslang in 1842 married William Semple, son of William Semple & Christina Dunn.  William’s wife Janet died in 1864 in Loudon, Ayrshire. Recently I looked at the death record on Scotland’s People only to discover that the parents of that Janet Bell were recorded as John Bell and Ann Frame. The death was reported by Janet’s husband William, so presumably he knew who her parents were.

So I'm now trying to find out what became of ‘my’ Janet Bell. There are no immediately obvious answers to me, no obvious marriages in Cambuslang, no obvious deaths in the post 1855 period. The census transcriptions on Ancestry are not very reliable.

Has anyone come across any stray records that could match?

Thanks

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Re: DRUMMOND STUART 1747 marriage occupation of groom?
« on: Wednesday 08 October 14 04:47 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching the Drummond family in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire too c 1800-1820.

There are references to a register made c1807 by the parish minister of church attendees in Cambuslang. John Drummond and his wife Elizabeth Bird and 4 (unnamed) children are listed. There is a Mary Drummond nearby. The area both are living in is Sauchiebog. Sauchiebog was one of the poorest areas.

An observation is that there was a significant influx of people into Cambuslang in the first half of the 19th Century. Given there are no other Drummonds in any of the other districts of Cambuslang, I would be inclined to believe that the Drummonds were migrants to the Cambuslang area from other parts possibly Glasgow/Barony parish.

Around the same time my Bell family ancestors moved from Glasgow to Cambuslang. All this is to say I would look for leads in Glasgow, Barony etc., as opposed to Cambuslang.

In your comments about William Pitman Lett's father Captain Andrews Lett you've commented he was a member of the 26th regiment of foot (Cameronians).

In the book Ottawa Past and Present published in 1927, Captain Andrews Lett is identified as one of the group of soldiers and officers from the 99th Regiment of foot, disbanded in Quebec in 1818, who left Montreal to found the Richmond Military Settlement in 1818. The settlement was one of the earliest permanent settlements in Carleton County.  Other sources have similarly noted that it was the men and officers of the 99th regiment who first established the Military settlements at Richmond, Lanark & Perth.

I've seen the reference to the 26th regiment quoted in several places, but I don't believe it is correct.

Renfrewshire / Re: COATS family representing COATS cotton Co in Russia in late 1800s

This is an interesting thread to follow, not sure if it is now cold.

If Lana was of Russian origin, her first name may have been Svetlana. Not sure if this helps.

Antrim / Re: James Chambers & Eliza Bell married Lisburn, July 1856
« on: Wednesday 09 January 13 22:30 GMT (UK)  »
I have received the copy of the death certificate for their son James who died in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1921.

According to the certificate his birthplace was Lisburn, Ireland and his date of birth was 11 April 1857.

Does anyone have asuggestions as to how and where to look for a birth record? Typically what information about the parents would an Irish birth record from that period contain ?

Thanks.

I have requested a copy of his death certificate from Manitoba. James was married in Pembina Co, North Dakota, USA - records don't seem to have survived from that time.

Thanks for the quick response!

In the Canada 1871 census their religion is listed as Presbyterian. In later censuses they appear to be baptists.

There is no marriage information listed in any of the other two Scottish birth registrations.

Antrim / James Chambers & Eliza Bell married Lisburn, July 1856

I have been trying without success to locate a marriage record for James & Eliza. I’d welcome any help or information anyone  can offer on either the marriage record or the parents, families etc of James & Eliza.

The marriage details, Lisburn (Ireland) July 1856, are taken from the birth registration of their 4th child, John, born in Scotland in December 1861.  James & Eliza were also resident in Glasgow at the time of the 1861 census. In the census James’s age is 33 and his birthplace is given as Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Eliza’s age is 28 and her birthplace is Ireland. James’ occupation is a weaver. Their first child James was born in Ireland in 1856, and so far a birth record has not been identified. The second & third, Agnes & William were born in Glasgow and birth registrations have been identified.

James & Eliza subsequently emigrated with their family to Canada around 1865-66. James died in Manitoba, Canada in 1919, and Eliza died sometime after the 1891 Canada census. From James’s death registration his birth is given as 12 May 1826.

If anyone can provide information on James and Eliza, or their son James, prior to the 1861 census it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks Tillypeg.

This is the correct marriage, as I have since been able to confirm that my ancestor, William Hudson, was born in Sherburn in 1799.

Thanks Doug
