What also interested me was that Penelope`s husband had also lived in Crompton St. William was only 7 when his parents split and his mother and new man moved to a lodging house in Crompton St. There she married and had 3 more children, so there must have been aplace for unfortunates there. Although William and his mother were at crompton st long before Mary Ann I wonder if they shared stories. The Old Fourpenny Hotel is 27-29 Crompton St and I intend to visit one day as I am sure my ancesters were ther or close.

Hi there
I was interested to read of Mary Ann Blackwell for several reasons. Firstly her story shows how things were at that time but also because my great great grandmother appears on the 1901 census just above her, Penelope Coates.
