Australia / Re: Luke and Campbell Families in Brisbane
« on: Friday 22 November 19 06:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Robyn, I think I have tried to make contact with you before and can’t seem to remember if we chatted or not. Happy to exchange stories and pictures. I think Kris Haynes has posted a few and I’ve taken quite a few of mine from her. Not sure I am her favourite person after I questioned one of her captions and she wasn’t very happy with that. But hey ho!
I’m descended from Lizzie Ferguson, younger sister of John Campbell who emigrated to Queensland in 1911 I think. She died in aberfoyle and I have very vague memories of her. I live in Glasgow which is only 30 mins away from Drumlean.

Hi Angelique,
Many thanks for your message. We are related but not as closely as you think! My mother is Flora, her father was John Ferguson, his mother was Lizzie Campbell, younger sister of Mary Ann Campbell. Dan Campbell was also my gt, gt, grandfather. He was quite a character and I have a lot of info on him and his wife Flora Kelly. She couldn’t speak English when she arrived in Aberfoyle and the kids would have grown up speaking Gaelic.
I am in occasional touch with a lady in Brisbane called Lisa, her grandfather was Hugh Luke so I guess that makes you second cousins. I have sent her a wee email asking if she would like to make contact with you.
As a child I met Daniel Campbell Luke, he was known as Campbell or Cam to his close family. He was visiting Scotland in the late 70s having been told he was terminally ill. He had arranged the trip before being told and said if he died in Scotland then so be it. He was a bit of a lad in his youth and had an eventful war in a lot of surprising ways.
My mother met Hugh Luke and Margaret Luke when they visited Scotland. I think Peter was the only one who didn’t come back for a visit.
I don’t think Lisa knows any of Peter’s family, we were unsure if he had any but now we know there are seven!
Rootschat only allows swapping of email addresses on private messenger so I will send you one with my email address.
Regards,
Gary

Stirlingshire / Chief Constable of Stirlingshire
« on: Saturday 10 February 18 16:54 GMT (UK)  »
Alexander Campbell (1828-1887), Chief Constable of Stirlingshire was married first to Elisabeth Dunn until her death in Jan 1870. He married Jane Clark Anderson in Nov 1870 only for them to divorce some time later.

I was wondering if anyone knows what happened to his second wife Jane Clark Anderson? They had four children, the youngest Alexandrina was living with her father in 1881. She was born 12 Nov 1845 in Glasgow and they were married at 77 Renfrew Street, Glasgow, 15 Nov 1870.

Thanks

Thanks, that record looks really promising.
Do you find that Ellen is a shortening for Helen as is usually the case in Scotland?
Irish genealogy looks to be a bit more difficult that in the UK?

Thanks

Dublin / Ellen Scott b c1843, Dublin; d 1904, Fulham

Hi all,
Most of my family are Scots and I have no experience of Irish records, was hoping someone may be able to help with Ellen's background.

Ellen Scott, married James Thomson (Thompson in the marriage register) in Freemantle, Western Australia, Oct 1861. Fathers name entered as Thomas Scott, birth place given as Dublin.
James Thomson was a Barrack Sergeant, Royal Engineers. Their stay in Freemantle is well documented.
4 Children -
Ellen Louisa Thomson, bBalleymore, West Meath, 1862-1886
Elizabeth Grace Thomson, Weymouth, Dorset, 1864-1865
Amelia Grace Thomson, Weymouth, Dorset, 1866-1951
Clara Madeline Thomson, Portsea, Hampshire, 1868-1950
James Thomson died at Fort George, Inverness-shire in 1888.
Ellen is living with her son-in-law in Birmingham in 1891, is in Inverness in 1894 and with her daughter in Kensington in 1901. She dies there in 1904.

I know finding families in a large city can be difficult, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sheilagh!
Thanks for your message.
My mother is a Ferguson. Her grandfather, James Bain Ferguson was the brother of Walter Sr, so he was your Father's uncle.
I have five of your father's family, didn't have Nathan.
I have attached a picture of James Bain Ferguson, it would be great to chat more.
