Lincolnshire / Re: BANCROFT family of Caistor & photos
« on: Friday 14 May 10 23:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello Carole,

Thanks for replying and the information regarding David and Nicholson. I do not know Kellyfidoe.

Some years ago I went to Caistor and was sent to the house of a descendant. She told me her mother had had lots of photos but hey had all been burnt after her death! The only one which survived was of Nicholson Bancroft and it was one of the family photos I also had!

Thanks once again,

Mark

Lincolnshire / BANCROFT family of Caistor & photos
« on: Thursday 13 May 10 22:30 BST (UK)  »
I have a photograph of an old man sitting outside a backdoor whom I suspect may have been David BANCROFT of Caistor, my great great grandmother's brother.

I wonder if anyone has any information on the BANCROFTs in Caistor and in particular David and his brother Nicholson who were there in the latter part of the nineteenth century until their deaths between the two world wars. I have a definite photo of Nicholson. I am also lucky enough to possess a photograph album which supposedly belonged to the BANCROFTS with pictures from the 1870s-90s although very few of the subjects can be identified. I would love to be able to do so.

Best wishes,
Mark

Hello to all those who replied to my request for information almost exactly 5 years ago! I'm excited to see several researchers who are also interested in the Goslings and, in particular, have a close or more distant connection to John Boyle Gosling who is my great great grandfather.

John Boyle's daughter Caroline married my great grandfather Robert WHITE at Guisborough in 1915. They had time to have two children -only one of whom survived- before Rebecca died at the early age of 25. Robert went on to marry again but had no more children. After working for some years back in Lincolnshire he moved to Doncaster and I wonder if this was due to the connection with the Goslings or purely due to the availability of mining work? I had wondered if John Boyle and Rebecca (nee Claxton) had died in Doncaster; the information on this list seems to confirm that definitely was the case.

I would be very pleased to hear from anyone still researching the family. Do any photos exist anywhere of John Boyle and Rebecca or other members of their family? I have one photo of Caroline which I am happy to share.  Mark

Hello Listers.

In 1806 John WHITE died in Peterborough, Northamptonshire. Shortly afterwards, the Overseers of Peterborough began proceedings to have his wife, Sarah, removed to St Matthew's, Friday Street or St. Peter Cheap, Friday Street, both in the City of London.

It would seem the removal occurred in 1809 when Sarah was pregnant with Walter WHITE who was born on 21 September 1809 (date from M.I.) According to some censuses he was born in "London" while others state "Shoreditch".

I have no idea why Sarah and her three sons were removed to London (her husband, John, had been working in Peterborough as the Keeper of the House of Correction for 9 years prior to his death (so surely had gained a settlement there?) and previously he had been a soldier in the 25th Regiment (pensioned out in 1797 on losing a leg).

If anyone can help by a baptism I would be very grateful.

Best wishes,
Mark

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Re: Peterbrough records in Northants RO.
« on: Tuesday 03 July 07 20:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi Sandy,

Thanks for replying. I have actually already looked at the Northants. R.O. webpage. I live in Barcelona but will be visiting my parents in Lincoln for a week or so and am planning on driving down to Northampton for a day to consult records.

My question was basically to ask anyone who knows the office well if there are any resources I could use which I might not find easily as I have never been before. I have, for example, seen transcriptions of the St. John the Baptist Parish registers at Peterborough Library.

Thanks once again,
Mark

Hello Anne,

That's interesting... My great-grandfather was also a miner.

Thanks!

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Peterbrough records in Northants RO.
« on: Monday 02 July 07 15:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello.

I hope to visit the Northants. Record Office later this month during my holidays in England. I am particularly interested in records for the city of Peterborough from c. 1700-1815.

Does anyone who uses the office know of any good resources that are available for Peterborough, in addition to wills and parish registers?  I have just been looking on the A2A site for Northants. Record Office and have found several potentially interesting records but would be very pleased to know of others.

Thanks for any advice.

Best wishes,
Mark

England / St. John's Ambulance Association Medal 1933-4
« on: Monday 02 July 07 14:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I wonder if anyone can advise on the above association? My grandfather was a member and I have his silver medal with two clasps dated 1933 and 1934. A number appears on the reverse side-358338 and his name, ROBERT WHITE.

I have contacted St. John's Ambulance, but haven't, as yet, received a reply. I wonder if anyone knows why Robert might have been given the medal -did all members have one? Since it is made of silver it seems rather valuable to be simply a membership badge. Is it possible that he did something special to earn him special recognition?

The badge is about 2 cm wide, is circular with "THE ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION" around the outside and the cross of St. John in the middle. It has stems coming out of the circle to form a cross with a flower on each stem.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who may be able to offer advice.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Thanks Barbara and Bee for the webpages relating to Sculcoates. Interesting information. It would seem I need to start my request for help with William RUSHWORTH but asking for help locating his baptism in Hull, but then again, maybe the family at the time were Methodists!

Thanks once again,
Mark
