Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Request 1851 census lookup Bristol
« on: Monday 05 December 11 13:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

The 1851 census shows that Joseph was living with his widowed sister, Mary Newton in Anvil Street. Elizabeth Ashman nee Peglar married George, Joseph Ashman's brother, in Bedminster, Bristol in 1836. The 1851 census shows they were living with their four children at Crown Court, Bristol. George was killed in a work accident in 1854 and the following year his widow Elizabeth married Joseph at St John's church Bristol. The 1861 census shows them living at 2, Crown Court, South Green Street, Bristol with three of the children from the marriage between George and Elizabeth. Another of their children, John,  was living with his sister Sarah and his aunt Mary Newton nee Ashman at the Bake House, Anvil Street.

I believe that Joseph, Mary and George were all born in Wells Somerset and this is confirmed by the census details for 1851 and 1861. I am not aware of any connection with Canewdon in Essex.

I am dubious about the 1871 details as Joseph was born in Wells (refer to his details in the 1851 census) and Elizabeth was born in Calne, Wiltshire (refer to the 1851 and 1861 census records). I assume the birthplace of Wales for Joseph in the 1861 census was a mistake on the part of the enumerator (Wells becomes Wales?).

However, I would be grateful for any information about the whereabouts of Joseph and Elizabeth in 1871, assuming they are still alive.

Somerset Lookup Requests / John ASHMAN (died 1812) from Wells, Somerset
« on: Monday 21 November 11 10:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am researching John Ashman. I have been told he married an Elizabeth Harris c1795 and Jane Wall c1800 in Wells, Somerset. The Mormon IGI Database Search  show that a John and Jane Ashman were the parents of four children; Mary (1802), Sarah (1806), Joseph (1809)and George (1812) who were all baptised at St. Cuthberts church in Wells. I am assuming that Jane Ashman's maiden name was Wall. The Mormon IGI Database Search also shows a John Ashman being buried at St. Cuthbert's in 1812.

I have looked for information about John's date of birth and his two marriages but to no avail. I would be grateful if anyone can provide any additional details about John and his two wives?

Hi,

My earlier response was oversimplified - my apologies.

A Find My Past search based on John Bateman born in 1880 does not appear to pick up the existence of John in Wolverhampton in 1911. A search based on  Hettie Bateman  is more productive.  In the 1911 census household transcription, his wife Hettie was recorded as the head of the family but there is still no mention of John. However, the original census image does indeed show that John was alive but not at the family home. He was still a baker but now termed as a worker rather than as an employer. I have taken this to mean that the family business no longer existed.

I am curious as to whether this family tale about the bakery accident, presumably prior to 1911,  has any factual basis as it may go some way to explaining why John was no longer an employer in the bakery trade. I have started to research inquest records on the internet for that period but so far nothing has come up.

Hi Skylark,

Thank you for the response.

Records show that he married Hettie Swatman in 1906 and was living in Coleman Street in 1926.

By 1911, one of his brothers was still working as a baker but the other was now an insurance agent. I was unable to find John Bateman in the 1911 census so have no idea how long the family business lasted. There is a family story that their business broke up following an accident at the bakery. I have not been able to find out the date or location but a living relative has mentioned the Gorsebrook Lane area of Wolverhampton.

Any further information will be much appreciated.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Baker and Broadbent

Hi Donna,

Further research (GRO marriage certificate) has confirmed that Charlotte Baker married Charles Broadbent at St Mary's church, Brewood on the 11th May 1843.

The Warwickshire Baptisms records for 1813-1906 include the baptism of Charlotte on 21 June 1818. This took place at Tanworth-in-Arden (rather than Tamworth). The parents were Thomas (a labourer) and Anne and they lived at Astbury Heath in the parish of Tanworth-in-Arden. I can see an Aspley Heath near to Tanworth but not Astbury Heath.

Thank you again for your help. Any further information from yourself or anyone else about her whereabouts in 1841 and her parents, e.g. birth dates, marriage would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

The 1900 Kelly's Directory for Staffordshire lists John Bateman as a Baker with premises(?) in Molyneux St, Wolverhampton.

Does anyone have any information about the Bateman bakery business?
