Dumfriesshire / Re: William Pool b. Annan about 1814
« on: Sunday 28 April 13 16:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi Iandj

Thanks for the information. The William Pool at Newbie Barns is definitely the right one. My Grandmother was born at the same property in 1923 so that house stayed in the same family for many years. I don't know who Irving Carlyle is but he cannot be Janet's son as she would have been to old when he was born in 1835. It's possible he is William's son but would he not then have the surname Pool?

I have since found information regarding Newbie Barns from 1841 which shows two different sets of Pools which must all be related somewhere

Dumfriesshire / William Pool b. Annan about 1814
« on: Saturday 27 April 13 19:03 BST (UK)  »
I researched the Pool side my family a few years ago and I’m just trying to pick it up again but I can’t get beyond my 3 x great grandfather William Pool who was born in Annan around 1814. I think his mother was Janet Irving and I’ve often wondered if he was perhaps illegitimate as I’ve never been able to find a father.

What I do know about William is that he married Isabella Pool b. 1838 in Annan. She was over 20 years younger than him and according to family folklore she was his cousin,. Her father was Robert Pool b. about 1802 so if William and Isabella really were cousins then Robert and William must have been brothers. I can’t find any record of Robert’s parents either so now seem to be stuck.

I believe that William and Isabella are buried in the same grave along with many of their children in Annan’s Old Cemetery.

If anyone has more info I'd be very grateful and happy to share all that I know.

Thanks for the quick replies. It's interesting there's no sign of a George (as named as the father on his marriage certificate). I don't know who the James Jackson is that he was living with in 1901 so the mystery deepens.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Joseph Gilleghan b. Barnsley Dec 1898

If anyone has access to the Barnsley census for 1901 or 1911 I'd be interested to know who the other members of Joseph Gilleghan's household was. The 1901 census seems to have milspelt the surname as Gillsghan.

He was my great grandfather but is a bit of a mystery. He married Matilda Selina Wilson in Barnsley in 1920 and his marriage certificate names his father as George Gilleghan. I believe his mother was Lucy (maiden name not known) but I can find no marriage for his parents and seem to have hit a brick wall :(

Charles Saddler age 16?

The "16" in the FreeBMD reference above is the Volume Number - age at death didn't start appearing until the mid 1860s.

FreeBMD has the marriage registration
Thomas Saddler, Coventry, Sep 1860, 6d 531

Possibility?

regards

I hadn't seen that death record for Charles Saddler before so thanks for that bit of info. He was only aged 16 when he died so it could fit that he was Thomas's father and that Ann then married Thomas Spicer but the bit that doesn't fit is that Ann's fathers name was Thomas Sadler unless Charles and Ann were related (cousins maybe) and shared the same surname. A bit of a wildshot I know.

I haven't been able to find any marriage record for a Charles Saddler and Ann which still makes me think he was possibly illegitimate especially as the parents would have been young but I do think that the IGI record is the same individual in the 1841 census. If Thomas Sadler was illegitate could he still be baptised and could his father still be named on the record?

What I do know is that Thomas Spicer and Ann had several children including John (my 4x great granfather). Thomas Sadler was raised in the same household but I don't know if ever married or anything about him and its always been a bit of mystery as to who he actually was.

Thanks for the welcome messages and your prompt replies

I don't have the marriage certificate of Thomas Spicer and Ann Sadler but their entry is listed at http://www.hunimex.net/warwick/bmd/Coventry/Holy%20Trinity%20Marriages%201837-1842a.pdf where Ann is described as a spinster.

I'd seen the 1841 census record and that does relate to the same people so I'd wonder if perhaps Thomas Sadler was illegitimate or if Ann had been married before. It's interesting that his parents are listed as Charles and Ann Sadler so I wonder if perhaps her spinster status is incorrect?

Ann Spicer (nee Sadler) died in 1893 aged 76 so she would have been born around 1817.

I'm trying to find the birth record of Ann Sadler who married Thomas Spicer in 1841. Her father is listed as Thomas Sadler on the marriage record but I'm struggling to find a birth record to identify who her mother was. Can anyone help me?
