Dublin / Muriel MacDonagh Funeral Photographs?
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 00:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello all, I was enquiring as to the existence of any photographs of Muriel MacDonagh's funeral in July 1917. (Thomas MacDonagh's widow, who tragically died only a year after the Rising having drowned off the coast of Skerries). Several sources describe a large cortage of several thousand Volunteers following the coffin on the way to Glasnevin - I was just wondering is anyone aware of any photographs that may exist of this?

Thanks very much.

Will certainly do capel street man, sorry for the belated reply. Will likely post it here.

Private 1st class, any chance you could produce the list of names of the Q Company here - or can anyone else point me to the direction the post is at?

(And silly as this sounds, if Kennedy was in Clarke's IRB Centre, it's reasonable to assume he was aquainted with Clarke himself?)

Hi CSM,

I haven't made a huge amount of headway. John O'Reilly's military pension application didn't contain any particularly useful info about his Q Co. activities. He stated in his file in the Military archive, Cathal Brugha Barracks that he worked for Michael Murphy Ltd. I don't know whether the SS Baltic and the other ship mentioned in the Thompson site were Murphy ships. John explicitly stated that  that he worked on the SS Finola.

John, not sure is it of any use to you, or have you uncovered much information already but by great-grandfather, John 'Archie' Kennedy was Captain of Q Company, and I came across someone on this board who knew him personally: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,566136.0.html

I just noted you mentioned Kennedy seems to have been down as a reference in O'Reilly's military pension application.

E. and M. Companies

3rd BATTALION OLD I.R.A.

Dublin No. 1 Brigade - 196 Pearse Street

 - NAMES OF DECEASED MEMBERS -

Jack McGowan

- I am particularly interested in the names in bold print -

sandlotball, John 'Jack' McGowan was a Volunteer from the Skerries area. Local historian Frank Whearity wrote a paper on McGowan a few years ago and presented it to the local historical society. You can contact the society for a copy of the paper, and here's a summary of it. :)

Hi Gershannon, Sorry  I can not add any more to what I have put up at this point in time.

Ah no it's fine, thank you so much for the information related so far. :) You're spot on with the observation that many of these men would rarely detail their involvement, it was just the way things were. I'll post stuff on this thread if (and I should) uncover more.

It's fascinating the mention of 'Q company' that I found on his obituary, and that you've elaborated on, as the mention of it has baffled some historians who are familiar with the period. I don't believe at present there's any book on the period - certainly the activity around Dublin - that mentions their work (and by definition, his) even in passing. Is there any particular stories you remember regarding his activities?

You mentioned in the Dublin Brigage thread that Q company was Quartermaster-General (naturally) Sean McMahon's unit. As McMahon went pro-Treaty during the Civil War, am I to assume Kennedy also took that side?

In the National Museum at Collins' Barracks, there's a 1916 Roll of Honor and there is a 'John Kennedy' listed in the Four Courts garrison. I also came across a prisoner autograph book from 1921 in Ballykinler where a John Kennedy has written a poem. This is to not to mean it is in fact Archie Kennedy, or even the same John Kennedy, but I'll continue to do research into it - as well as Military Archives.

It's claimed by some familiy members he was one of the IRA members who assisted Collins' Squad on Bloody Sunday. Is there any way you could verify this yourself? Apparently it was a difficult subject for him to talk about.
