Dublin / Re: presbyterian records in Dublin?

Looks like the records for Abbey/Findlater's Pres are located in Local Custody only.  I'm hoping corisande will pass on contact information for the church :D

I believe my family attended the Abbey St Presbyterian Church in the 1820s-1830s.  They were Scottish and apparently that church was called the Scots Church.  Where are the records currently located?  Thanks for your helpful post.

The Presbyterian records do exist (well mainly exist!) but many of the churches have closed.

My g-grandfather was the minister at the Abbey St Presbyterian Church, which is now closed, but I did manage to fine that the records had been transferred to another Presbyterian church which is still operational, and they were kind enough to extract the information that I needed.

You would need to find what was the original Presbyterian church(es) in St Thomas and St George.  If there is a Dublin resident reading this they can give you that information much quicker than I can research it! Then if it is closed email or phone a neighbouring Presbyterian Church to see who held the records.

I should add that 100 years ago in Dublin (and in Scotland) there were various "flavours" of Presbyterianism, as every so often there was a schism on some deep point of principle, and half the congregation would move down the road and set up a new church.

Thanks for the information! I have good information on the cochrans before 1860, but nothing between that date and 1864, when the emigrated to America. In really curious about a possible John Cochran at Skerries in 1860-1864.  Were there any Cochran or Cochranes at Skerries in Thoms 1862 directory? Thanks again for the help... I really appreciate it!

going back in time.... 1840 (Pettigrew & Oulton) :

  John Cochrane, worked muslin warehouse
   22 Marlborough Street
   res. Merrion House

No sign of any Cochranes or muslin trades on D'Olier St, and there's no separate listing for Skerries.

the 1834 directory has just one Cochrane in the Index - a Robert Cochran 'Troon Coal office', at 11 City Quay.

Sorry about that.. Looking for John Cochran, Robert Cochran, and Samuel A Cochrane. All were sewed muslin manufacturers/merchants in skerries and Dublin.  Thanks for your help.. Greatly appreciate it!

Hi Shane,

If you have easy access to Thom's 1863 Directory, could you lookup all with surname Cochran or Cochrane in Dublin City and Skerries, County Dublin?  Thanks so much!

....

I'd need a bit more detail to carry out a useful search for you - e.g. first names, trade/occupations, street name ?

Not every person or address is listed in directories - e.g. occupants of cottages, tenements etc are not shown, neither are occupation like labourers etc

Have you located any civil marriage or birth records (i.e. after 1864) for your ancestors ?
These should give you more detail..

....
Robert Harvey IRVINE solictor, he married Kate Sophia Samuels in 1855 , Clonturk, Dublin.
.....

I thought maybe that should be Clontarf ... but I've just seen that there's a townland and Civil parish named Clonturk near to Coolock

will check Thom's '63 for you this evening.

Okay thanks so much for checking! I know they were buried in Belfast, so now I know it's not Clifton Street or Shankill..

Esther- I have Gravestone Inscriptions (Belfast, vol. 1 ) which includes Shankill Graveyard. Let me know what names you are looking for and I can chek to see if there's a headstone listed.

Hello Aghadowey,

I was wondering if you could look up a couple people probably buried in Shankill?

-John McNair, died 1830
-Elizabeth McNair, died 1851
-Children of John and Margaret Cochran, died sometime 1852-1864

Best Regards,
Cliff
