Lanarkshire / Re: School Adjacent to Caledonia Road

Hi!
The school they went to would depend on their religion. If they were catholic they would have gone to St. Francis which was I believe on Mathieson Street, the church and school were side by side, or they might have went to a school in Oatlands, I'm not sure of the name though( if I'm wrong, someone will clarify it ) If they were protestant they could have went to Oatlands, Camden or Hayfield school.
My father was born 1911 on Caledonia Street and went to St. Francis, I was born on South Wellington Street although it changed to Lawmoor Street long before I was born. My mothers grandmother was a Robertson who lived on South York Street although she was born in Helesburgh.  I hope this helps.

Hi Chudleigh, if you go to the site " The only way is Gorbals " there is a  member there called Colin Mackie who knows quite a lot about the Southern Necropolis. I'm not sure if Colin would be able to help you with the information your looking for, it might be worth asking him though. I hope this helps.

There are 2 groups on FB about the Gorbals. 1) The only way is Gorbals 2) Old Gorbals Pictures, they are both about people who grew up in the Gorbals, Hutchesontown and Oatlands area who put photos and memories of growing before being scattered all over Glasgow. If you post there you might find be lucky in finding more info as there is quite a lot of people that grew up in Florence Street. I hope this helps.

Thank you Neale1961 and CaroleW for your quick reply.   I lost a lot of my copies when I bought a new laptop so I have been going through everything to see what was missing.  Thank you Neale1961 for the info on the 1871 census confirming his name was William James. I have went onto SP and purchased a copy of the Census.

Lanarkshire / Help please.
« on: Friday 23 December 22 00:47 GMT (UK)  »
I have a James Gillan on the 1881 census age 17 years born Greenock, Renfrew making him born 1864. My problem is I can't find a James with the mother Jane Black, I have found a William born 1864 with the correct parents.  James was the only one born Greenock, according to the 1911 census he was one of 10 siblings. My question is are they the same person or is William the 10th child I'm missing. Thanks in advance for any help.

I think if the child is under 15 it means both parents alive. If you look at the census all the children have BA next to them if they are under 15 years.
