Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: War photo
« on: Thursday 28 August 25 00:01 BST (UK)  »
Thanks everyone. I'll see if I can find any other photos with that name, or with the fancy 'M'.

I'm from Scotland and so was my grandfather. I think Trainspotting probably made me aware of the name Spud as a nickname.

Hi,

I'm not sure if the first line is a name or something else. The front of the photo is of my grandfather and another man, but my grandfather's name isn't on it so it might just be the name of the other person (Spud?), if it is a name at all.
The bottom line looks to be 'between Trittau and Kiel' which are about 50 miles apart in Germany.

Thanks.

That would make sense. I was reading it as one word. Thank you.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / forename help

Hello,

I'm struggling to work out the forename on the first record here, from the 1841 Scotland census. My other research tells me it should be Mary, but it doesn't look like that at all. She would also be a widow, like the one below, so not sure why it would be different. Thank you.

Thank you. I agree Millhill seems more likely. The reason I thought Millkill is because it is mentioned in this document which I found after a quick Google - https://archive.org/stream/edinburghcounty187071dir/edinburghcounty187071dir_djvu.txt.

MonicaL - My relative's name was Georgina McDonald nee McIntosh and James McDonald was indeed her husband, who was a baker.

It's a 1902 death record. I don't have a subscription with any site just now. These are records I got from Scotland's People which I'm just now getting round to looking at.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Musselburgh street name

Hi

Does anyone with local Musselburgh knowledge recognise this name - 9 (something) Square? I found something which suggests it might be Millkill, but just looking to see if anyone can confirm.

Thanks

Thanks everyone. It will be Victoria Street, sorry, St. I added that to a search on the 1901 census and it matches the right people from my family.

Thanks again.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / place of death

Hello, can someone please help me decipher the place of death here. I know it's Harthill, but can't make out what it says before. The other 2 records on the page show only West Benhar, so I don't know if it's one word, or 'something' street.

Thank you.
