Hi everyone,

I have being reading this thread with great interest, and finding the links and information fascinating.

I was wondering if some of you good people could help me get to the bottom of what my Grandfather may have being doing during the War of Independence and the Civil War. We know very little was known about his movements until we found that there is a file of his on display in the National Library

His name was William Warren, Born in Kingstown 1896
He was in the Royal Irish Fusillers until 1920
He then held the rank of Sgt in B Coy 2nd Batt Dublin

The papers include in his file in the National Library

Include a list of Customs House Arrest. Nominal Role

and witness reports of a shooting on Capel St Sept 1922

Among other papers

here are two links to more detailed summaries of what is in his files

National Library

and Auction Cat No 163
http://www.adams.ie/BidCat/Catalogues.asp?F1=3072&F2=4169&status=A&F4=0&select=7022&offset=150

I haven't had a chance to view these papers and it has only come to light recently, it also appears that he remained a soldier until 1968, which none of us in the family we aware of.

If anyone could help in shedding some light on this, it would be very much appreciated, I'm afraid my knowledge of that period in history is very limited and rusty and I'm trying to brush up on it how.

Thanks in advance

Hi guys you might want to check out the history of Bray (6 miles south of where you talking about) a Breslin was extremely important to the development of the town as a holiday resort (like Blackpool) from 1880 to 1910, in fact he owned a hotel out here, which is partially still standing, I'm working on a documentary of Bray at the moment so if I can help and if he's link, I would gladly help fill in the gaps :)

Sorry his name was Edward Breslin :)

Dublin / Re: MAHER family of Bullock, Dalkey
« on: Friday 30 September 11 21:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for information about John Maher b. c 1822 who lived in the cottages at Bullock Harbour, Dalkey.  He had a son Christoper born in the early 1850's and lived in Dalkey with his wife and four sons.  John Maher had a brother James Maher who also lived in this area.  Some of the surnames linked to the family are: O'Keeffe, Tallant, McDonald and Stapleton.  I'm interested in hearing from anyone connected with this family.

Hi not sure how I can help but both those names Tallant and Stapleton (at pilot cottages bullock) are in the 1901 census for being Ship Pilots, I believe the Lighthouse Commission in Dun Loaghaire might have details, or the Maritime Musuem in Dun Loaghaire will. Generally to become a Ships Pilot was quiet difficult, and appears to be kept from Father to son, cause a person needed to nominated for the job. By the way I from the James Warren side of the Pilots, hope this helps and good luck :)

PS Also Bullock harbour was used as a training ground for Ship Pilots, as well as one of the deepest harbour in south co Dublin, before Dun Loaghaire and Howth were built :)

Hi
Just back from the Library in Howth and what a worth while visit it was. If anyone is interested in the Rorke/Rourke's of Howth, some one kindly drew up 5 pages of family trees (although I'm not sure how accurate they are but the might definitely of use as pointers) also if anyone would like jpegs of these please just let me know, or if they want a name looked up

the Orginal families on each page are as follows

Hugh Rourke (Hearth Money Rolls c 1663) has 6 parents and children charts from 1790's period

Ignatius Rourke married to Ellen Larkin and their children also Thomas Rourke and Catherine Moore and children c 1845ish

Edward Rorke + Rose Murphy 3 generations marriage 1845ish

Christopher Rourke + Jane Farrell married 1839 3 generations

Patrick Rorke O'Rourke + Catherine Kirwan married 1838 4 generations

I hope this will be of assistance to someone

Thanks Shane,

I haven't found the marriage certs yet, but have found the families on 1901 and 1911 census, I going to check out you link now, and I'm planning to head out to Howth, later this week.

I fairly sure that everything going back to Gibney and Rorke marriage is right, as family members can still remember it luckily enough the Gibney's lived to good old age. Anne Gibney owned the small farm on the hill of Howth, and left it to John and Mary, it's now owned by cousins of mine

What we also had being told and I wonder if anyone had heard this rumor, was a Spanish fisherman had landed in Howth and that the Rorke/Rourkes where descendant from him (hence the name Darkie). Hence why I wondering is there a link between Howth town and the hill.

Again Thanks for your reply and pointing me in another direction. Greatly appreciated

Don

Dublin / Rourke Rorke Howth
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 12:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I just saw this thread and I was hoping that maybe some of you could help me, trace my family

my Father, Grand father, and GGrand Father's where all named John Rorke and lived on the Hill of Howth, or the summit, they also all had the nickname "Darkie", due to their colouring

John Rorke JUN(GrandFather) DOB 1901 married Christina Conway

John Rorke SNR (GGrandFather) DOB 1873 to 1940 married  Mary Gibney

in the 1901 cenus there appears to be an Anne Gibney (unmarried) living on the same property a sister
and also a Patrick Rourke (fisherman) DOB 1851 and a Anne Rourke (Wife) DOB 1851. I'm wondering if it's possible that these are John Rorke's snr parents.

I also see in the 1911 census that their is a lot of Rorke/Rourke/O'Rourke living in Howth most of them fishermen and around the same age as Patrick Rourke (spelt "Rorke" in 1911 census) could it be possible that these are related.

Any help anyone has that could shed some light on this would be great

Thanks in advance

Don
