Mayo / Re: Bernard Goggins, Butcher, Westport
« on: Thursday 07 June 12 16:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

There are still Goggins families in the Westport area, particularly Kilmeena, about 5 miles from Westport town. Although it was never a common surname in the area, it was not a wholly uncommon Mayo name either. There are no Goggins butchers (or otherwise) listed in the Westport entry in Slater's directory of 1846, but that might mean Slater's missed some OR your man operated as a butcher somewhere outside the town itself, in one of the surrounding districts. Maybe contact Clew Bay Heritage Centre (Westport); they have a genealogical service (fee) and may be able to do an initial look-up.

Good luck

Yes, unfortunately I don't have a name for him. He could be from any of about 15 different branches of my family or he could be just someone from westport who my family knew. It's a tough one.......!

Hi and many thanks for your posts. I had suspected one of them was the Khedive's Star but I'm not sure where to start looking from there. I don't know who the man was, only that the photo was taken by a local photographer here in westport, co.mayo. It has been in the family probably since it was taken and I know that one of the man's daughters in the photo also appears in another photo we have which was taken around the same time. I don't know anyone in that pic either! And to compound things, the medal rolls for pre-WWI don't include birth place. So I can't search by place and match an age to the face etc.. Is there any other class of Army/Navy record where I might narrow things down a bit? Any more help would be very much appreciated!
James

Armed Forces / Help identifying medals
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 12:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Could anyone please help me identify (even roughly) the medals in this fragment of an old picture. I'm trying to identify the man in the pic. It was taken in Mayo, Ireland in the late 1800s. The man wearing the medals looks between 65 and 80 years old at the time of photo, so the medals must have been for service before (say) 1880. They are probably British Army medals but I just don't know so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
James

Re Ellicott......there were Ellicotts in Westport, Co Mayo until the middle of the 20thC. Not sure if there are any descendents left. They had a pub on Quay rd Westport. There were also Ellicotts in Newport, about 7 miles from Westport

Hi - not sure if I have the right man here but I'm looking for Leonard Griffiths who posted on GenesReunited about a Joseph Durkan b.1904, lived in Holyhead. If that's you, could you please send a personal message to me as we might have a connection through the Durkans.
Thanks, James Kelly
