Australia / Re: Elizabeth Taylor - Born 18-Dec-1819 Launceston, Tasmania

Have been looking at your exchanges about Elizabeth Taylor and might have some new information about her first husband, Edward Thomas.
Edward was born in Birmingham in 1804 and at the age of 17 was convicted at the Stafford Assizes on 15 March 1821 to transportation for life.
He came to Tasmania (Van Diemens Land, then) aboard the ship Claudine which left Woolwich 20 August 1821 and arrived Derwent (Captain John Crabtree) 15 December 1821.
He was described as being a Silver Plate and Wire worker, height 5ft 5-1/4 inches tall with hazel eyes and brown hair. On arrival he was placed in employment with a Benjamin Jones.
So, he'd been in the colony for 13 years by the time he married Elizabeth. Seems to have been a bit of a cradle snatcher ;=}
Cheers
Ted
Have now found that this is incorrect. This person was still living after the death of the correct Edward Thomas.  Sorry for false information.
cheers

Australia / Re: Tasmania Lookup THOMAS and UNDERWOOD family
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 01:46 BST (UK)  »
Yes, my Grandfather was Carl Edwin Lucas Thomas born May 16 1886 as was his twin sister Eva Victoria Thomas. Both lived reasonably long lives unlike their
following twin siblings Amy and Oliver who only lived for about 10 months after their birth two years after Carl and Eva. They were from Emma Lucas as you will note from Carl's full name.
I have some photos of Carl and his wife Elsie Ruth (Brown) and also of Eva.
Not sure just who James Thomas was, though, he doesn't appear in my tree for Charles Thomas and Mary Underwood. Did he have another first name but preferred to be called James ?? Perhaps Edley Louis James Thomas ???
Cheers Ted
PS: Here is a photo we believe to be Charles Edward Thomas snr. Have photos of Carl Thomas and his wife Elsie Ruth Brown and others.

I've been looking at your conversation about Charles Edward Thomas and his "marriage" to Emma Lucas (actually Emma Jane Lucas). I can help you out with your research there. Emma Lucas was the 2nd "wife" of Chas Edward, his first as you seem to have found was Mary Ann Underwood and the married in Launceston on 14 April 1861. seven children in that marriage, the eldest being Charles Edward Henry Thomas who died in Box Hill Victoria in 1933 (this caused me some confusion for a while ???). Then he entered into a "marriage" with Emma Lucas and they had six children, one of whom was my mother's father. Chas Edward Snr also died in Box Hill Vic. in 1925.
Emma had previously been married to Alfred Harris and had one daughter to him
Rachel Grace, then she moved on to Chas. Edward, then on to Patrick Summers and had three children with him and finally ended up with Parkinson Johnson until her death in West Devonport in 1904. Poor old Alfred Harris had to wait until 1904 before he could legally remarry as that was when he became a widower !!!
Hope this sort things out for you.
Regards Ted
