I have a copy of the death certificate for Walter Joss died 1st August 1858, it gives no information other than his age - 45.  No cause of death or name of parents etc, under 'Where and when died' it has Carthagena. It also says he was a Master Mariner lived in Shields and the surgeon's name was
Antonio Moneado. The death was registered on 16th August. The consular officer was Edmund J Turner. All very disappointing.

An article in A History of the Great Lakes about  his grand son Frederick W Green says 'Captain Frederick W. Green (deceased) was born in the State of Minnesota, in 1858. His father was Capt. Charles H. Green, who sailed on salt water twenty-eight years and commanded many vessels. His maternal grandfather, Capt. Walter Joss, was also a seafaring man. He sailed ocean ships, and his sons were all sailors, and his daughters married sailors. Our subject's father was born at Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germany, in 1828, and is now living in retirement at Duluth, Minn. His father* died in Carthagena, Spain, and is buried there. Both served through the Crimean War in the British navy.'

*Frederick's father, Charles H Green (husband of Jane Marr Joss) was still alive when this was written so I think it should say father in law and refers to Walter.
