Hi Tilly

My gg grandfather, George Porter, was the headmaster at Lurgan Model in 1880.  So I've done some research into the school.  I also have many family, Porter & Livingston, who attended the school over the years.  They would have been at school with your Mary Fleming probably.

Anyway, Family Search (latter day saints church) has the school registers on microfilm, I've researched them many times. The films have come from PRONI.

Hope that helps!

Hi there (Sorry I haven't caught your name yet!)

What a wonderful photo of the Porter sisters!  I also have individual photos of them and their two brothers, James and George.

Sorry about the email thing, I didn't know the rules, my mistake!

It looks like we are third cousins!  My great grandmother is actually Annie, and she had seven children all together, not just Nancy.  The youngest child was Henry, and he's my grandfather.  Annie married James Livingston in 15/6/1892 in Antrim.

I have alot of information about the Malcomson's.  From what I understand they were very close to my great grandmother, Annie.  I also have a couple of photos of Elizabeth, Albert, and their children which you may be interested in.

I have connections to other cousins which I'm sure you would like to know about.  One is actually a Byrne too.

I'm looking forward to being able to swap more indepth notes soon!

Take care
Leanne  :)

Thanks so much to you both for the info, I really appreciate your time.

I don't believe that Richard Millar is a relative unfortunately.

I'll contact some military websites and see if I can find somebody who can explain how Thomas came about fighting for the US.  I'm very intrigued!

Take care
Leanne

Thanks again Lisa, you're awesome!

That is definitely my great grandfather, James.  I hadn't picked up that particular passenger record for him.  It will explain why he isn't found in the 1911 Irish census.

Do you know anything about finding US Army records?  If I could find those then I'm sure that would explain alot about Thomas's travels.

Take care
Leanne

Thanks so much everyone for your input!

Lisa, you are brilliant for finding Thomas in 1930 Salt Lake City.  I'm absolutely sure that this is him.  I'm thrilled to solve a big piece of the puzzle, he has been the mystery sibling that no-one ever mentioned!

His parents were James and Annie Livingston.  Thomas was born in Lurgan, Armagh, NI.  His parents moved to Antrim around 1906 and then separated shortly after that.  His father was in and out of America over the years and passed away in Belfast in 1954.  His mother stayed in Ireland and passed away in 1948 in Donaghadee.

Thanks again for your time!

Warm Regards
Leanne

Hello from New Zealand
My grandfather's brother, Thomas Millar Livingston, was born 16th March 1900 in Armagh, Northern Ireland.

I have found him in the 1920 USA Census living in Grant, New Mexico as a soldier for the US Army.  I've also discovered on an Irish website that during World War One he fought for the 12th Cavalry.  The census shows he immigrated in 1917 but I can't find any passenger record of this.

I would appreciate any help/advice on this.  What did the 12th cavalry do?  Was there an army base in Grant, New Mexico?  How did an Irish man sign up for the US army?

Thanks for your time! :) :)

Hello from New Zealand
I have discovered my grandfather's brother belonged to the 12th Cavalry during World War One.
He is Thomas Millar Livingston born 16th March 1900 in Armagh, Northern Ireland.
Apparently he was based in Grant, New Mexico.
How can I find out any further information about this?  I'm fascinated that a young teenage lad can leave home and end up in New Mexico fighting as a US soldier!
Thanks for your time.

Antrim / Porter/Small Query
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 22:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
My great great grandparents were George Porter b1844? (father James - Farmer) and Sophia Small b1841? (father Hugh - Engraver).  They were married in the Railway Street Presbyterian Church, Lisburn 12 February 1866.

They were both two of the original teachers in 1865 at the Lurgan Infant Model School.  George went on to become the School Master of Coleraine Model School around 1880, he passed away in 1882.  I have an original copy of a Algebra book he wrote in 1882!

I'd love to confirm their birth dates as I can't find them in the Antrim area.  I'd also like to find out more about being a teacher back then.  I gather you would have had to come from a well educated family.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated!
Leanne from New Zealand
