Berkshire Lookup Requests / Re: Place Of Interest- Bucklebury.
« on: Wednesday 21 September 11 19:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello.
Are you still interested in River Barn Farm, Bucklebury?  I live not far from there and would be happy to take some photos for you.  In case you do not already know, Bucklebury is a small village by the side of the River Pang, a chalk stream.  It does indeed dry up in dry summers, but always has done.  The village is mentioned in the Domesday survey and has some beautiful sixteenth century cottages.  The underlying geology is chalk with flint nodules, so the houses are built of flint with brick facings.
The farm is outside the village on a quiet country lane.  The parish of Bucklebury is a very large one and the manor was at one time owned by a wealthy clothier named Jack 'O' Newbury.  One of his descendants married Lord Bolingbroke who lived in the village for a while.  In the late 19th century the parish was home to George Palmer and his son, George William, of Huntley and Palmers fame.  Their house was just a few fields away from River Barn Farm.  At the other end of the parish Alfred Sutton and his wife built a country home.  He was a member of the family who owned Suttons Seeds.

Kind Regards.

Berkshire / Re: Help please... Charles Pocock... is he mine?
« on: Wednesday 21 September 11 18:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello Matt,
I am not sure of this will help at all, but a Charles Pocock attended school in Bradfield in 1866.  He was recorded in the school log book as having been withdrawn on 25th May.  This does not mean that he left the area as education was not compulsory at the time.  In fact the school roll is full of entries where children are withdrawn and re-admitted.  I do not have the full transcript of the school log, but it is kept at the Berkshire Record Office and there may be subsequent entries relating to him.  It does show, hwever, that a school age child was living in the area in 1866 and that he had not moved to Kensington.  Unfortunately the records do not give details of parent's names etc.

Hello.
I realise that this comes a long time after the last message posted, but it may still be of interest.  I have transcripts of part of the School Log Book for Bradfield and it mentions various members of the families you are researching.  Most of the entires simply record a child's admission, but others list achievements or punishments.  I have entires from 1866 and 1883-1893 for the following names: Selwood: Ellen, Beatrice, George, Henry, Martha and William.  Woodage: Charles, Charlotte.  Charles is recorded as dying in 1889.  I am happy to look up the log book entries if you are interested or you can see the original log books at the Berkshire Record Office.
