Cheshire Lookup Requests / Onston Hall, Onston
« on: Friday 20 May 05 19:15 BST (UK)  »
This property was, we understand, built in the 18th century and we thought, built by a member of the Hignett family.  Does anybody know anything about this house please?  i.e. when it was built.  We know members of the Hignett family lived there in the late 1800s, but have been unable to find out anything else.  I do have a photograph of it which was taken by Jackson Stops & Staff when it was up for sale in the late 1990s.

I have written to CRO who have no mention of it all, although it is Grade II listed.  Maybe that doesn't come under CRO's jurisdiction?

Failing knocking on the door, does anyone know, or could anyone find out please, the name of the present occupier, so I may write to them.  We live in Somerset and are coming up to Cheshire on 13/14 June, primarily to do some family history research.

Again, thanks in advance,

Sandra Hignett

Thank you Odessa and Peter, for that very valuable information.  At least it gives us somewhere to start, which is what we really wanted!

We are going to Cheshire in the middle of June, so will add this lookup to the list!

Thanks again,

Sandra

Wow, how's that for service!

The reason all this family history started is because i own a family bible and the first entry in it is by Samuel Hignett, born January 19, 1746/47 in Thornton le Moors.  He died in January 1817.

I live in Somerset, so I am trying to use the internet as much as I can, and came across this forum only this afternoon.

I have no records at all any earlier than 1746/47, but if you can find anything, with the spelling Hignett, and for now ignore the others, does that narrow your search down, to at least a manageable number?

For this reason I am unable to give you any Christian names, but a bit more information about "my Samuel".

He married Hannah Manifold on 5 October 1772 by licence.  Thomas Hewson was the vicar and the witnesses were Joseph Hignett and Peter Manifold.  We might assume (dangerous, I know!) that Joseph might have been his brother?

So for a start, maybe try Samuel, Joseph or William!

Thanks again,

Sandra

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / BURIAL REGISTERS : HIGNETT

I wonder if anybody knows whether Poor Law Unions or Lunatic Asylums had to keep burial records?

According to his death certificate, a relative, William Hignett, died at Upton by Chester Asylum in February 1875 aged 60.

I subsequently wrote to Chester Records Office to see if I could find out where he was buried.  They wrote back saying they could find no record of a burial of William Hignett in their municipal cemetery records, but suggested he could have been buried by Northwich Union (to whom the bill for his keep was presumably presented) but they did not keep any records of any Northwich cemeteries or surrounding parishes.

His immediate family, including his wife Dora who died 10 years before him, are buried at Weaverham Church.  But no sign of William!

I live in Somerset, so any help at all in locating where Northwich Union might have buried their dead would be very much appreciated.

Of course it could be that his family, on being told of his death, disowned him, so in that case he would probably have been put in an unmarked grave with others.  But again, I'm surprised that there are no records covering this procedure, with details of when and where.

Thanks again,

Sandra Hignett

When you have a moment, any information at all, on any "Hignett" male marriage, would be very much appreciated.

I don't think there will be all that many, but Thornton-le-Moors, Weaverham, Crowton, Onston would be the probable areas.

Thanking you, in anticipation,

Sandra Hignett
