Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Edward Kinsey c1800
« on: Thursday 08 November 12 19:24 GMT (UK)  »
Today at Hereford Archives, I spoke with someone who was researching THOMAS KINSEY, clergyman of Edvin Ralph, Wacton & elsewhere. I hope that he eventually sees this message.

Diocese of Hereford
Letters of Administration
On 21 August 1802, Letters of Administration were granted to MARY KINSEY (s) of the parish of Wacton in the County of Hereford, widow & relict of the deceased, on the deceased estate of THOMAS KINSEY late of Wacton, clerk, who died intestate.
MARY KINSEY was one of the bondsman
The other two bondsmen were JOHN OWEN of the City of Hereford, serjeant at mace, and JAMES JONES of the City of Hereford, grocer.
The value of the estate was sworn to be under £300.

Rev. Thomas Kinsey was buried at Edvin Ralph on 25 March 1802.  A reasonable search of the Hereford Journal failed to discover a report of his death.

If anyone knows the details of the baptism of Rev Thomas Kinsey or simply of the names of his parents, I would greatly appreciate the details.

I do have a little further information about Rev Thomas Kinsey (but not about his family).

Radnorshire / Re: Family Name of LANGFORD
« on: Monday 30 January 12 03:37 GMT (UK)  »
Several years ago, there was some discussion about Langford families of Knighton & of Kington. I'm hoping that some one knows something about Humphrey Langford of Kington.
Although a baptism has not yet been found, Humphrey Langford of Kington, Herefordshire, glover, is known to have been the son of John Langford of Kington, butcher. Although he lived in Kington, Humphrey Langford was admitted & sworn a Freeman of the City of Hereford in 1714. He seems to have married twice - each time the bride's first name being Mary. By his first wife, he had at least 2 daughters - Mary (1716) & Catherine (1719). By his second wife (he married Mary Smith at Knill in 1726), he had at least 1 daughter - Ann (1730).
Hoping that someone has information about Humphrey Langford of Kington.

Herefordshire / Re: Inman/Hinman from Ross, Herefordshire, England

I suspect, but do not have the proof, that one of the ancestors of your Thomas Martin Inman was Martin Inman of Ross, nailor, who was admitted & sworn a Freeman of the City of Hereford on 8 November 1714 – for wine & thanks – having married Martha, widow of Thomas Meredith, tailor.

Thomas Inman (who was of Ross), nailor, was admitted & sworn a Freeman of the City of Hereford on 12 March 1761 – for 5s – eldest son of Martin Inman, nailor. Thomas Inman & Elizabeth Cooper were married at Ross on 6 July 1754.

Thomas Inman must have died in the 1760s as Elizabeth Inman, widow of Thomas Inman, married James Addis at Ross on 11 November 1769.

I would be interested in knowing more about your Thomas Martin Inman.

The following members with this difficult-to-spell surname were all Freemen of the City of Hereford.  The spelling of the surname in this list is the spelling used when the men became Freemen. There are very good reasons to believe that all these spellings are of the one surname.

•Ann, wife of Humphrey Ashply, shoemaker, was buried in 1700: [St Peter’s].

•His son Humphrey Ashby was also admitted on 11 July 1707: [RF].

ASHBY, Richard. On 28 September 1719 (Thomas Russell, mayor), Richard Ashby, corviser, was admitted & sworn a Freeman – for 20s – late apprentice to James Mynd, corviser: [RF + AdmC, MAc].

Herefordshire / Ashby, Ashpley, Aspley, Aspree, &c of City of Hereford

In the 1700s, there were several families in the City of Hereford who had a surname which people found difficult to spell. There were so many variant spellings that it is not possible to list them all here. In fact, the only letters in common were the first two - "As". The remaining letters of the surname might include H, B, P. L. E. Y, R.

My research interest is the Freemen & Apprentices of the City of Hereford - 1660 to 1841.

Because there were so many variant spellings of this surname, I am finding it difficult to work out who was related to whom.

Is anyone researching these families? I would appreciate help to sort out who was who & how they were related to each other.

Anyone is welcome to the information which I have gathered on these families.

to Hereford Glynis.

I would be interested to know the name of your ancestor who was the publican at the Racehorse Inn, Hereford, in the mid-1800s.

I have acopy of the book The Pubs of Hereford City - by Shoesmith & Eisel. Naturally, there is a brief note on the Rachehorse Inn.  When I hear of additional information, I like to write it into my copy of the book.

Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Re: John Lane, born 1800, Hereford.
« on: Tuesday 20 September 11 13:02 BST (UK)  »
There were 6 parishes in the City of Hereford. For the period from 1794-1804, there was only one baptism of a John Lane - 19 June 1799 St Nicholas: John, son of William & Elizabeth Lane.

So it seems likely enough that you have the right baptism.

However, there is always a slight possibility that his parents were Quakers, Roman Catholics or other Non-conformists - and he was baptised (or not baptised) according to those traditions.

Have you searched for information about William Lane & his wife Elizabeth - just in case that search leads to information which confirms that your John was their son?

Thanks for the information about John Lane.

It will probably be on Wednesday that I will search the parish registers for any John Lane baptised c1800. Although the 1799 St Nicholas baptism might be his, it is always best for look for any possible baptisms.

Have you already found the baptism of John Lane born c1800 at All Saints, Hereford?

If not, I will do a look-up for you at the Hereford Record office in the coming week.

In the meantime, I would like to know the occupation of John Lane in his adulthood.
