In Scotland it is a term for a meat seller. As opposed to a butcher who dismembers carcases.
Ah! Thanks for that. The late husband of the lady at the top was described as a 'butcher' elsewhere. Must have been the family business (well, his wife's family business)

Stirlingshire / Census occupation

Hi Guys.
I see on some census returns an occupation that looks like 'flesher' - I don't think that's right - although if it is right I don;t know what the heck it is...
anyway, I have attached a section of the census so if anyone cam help, I would appreciate it.

Would like to talk to the person who was asking about hallside st,I was born there in 1946.
All fascinating stuff this - like others, there are several generations of my family who were married in St Francis, living in Hallside Street, South Wellington Street, and other places nearby. Next time I get up hom I'll have to take a trip over to see it.

Stirlingshire / MI Lookup Airth
« on: Friday 23 September 11 13:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi guys.
Having great fun tracing the ancestors, most of whom seem to have come from or lived in and around Airth. I have hit a bit of a brick wall with one guy though - Hugh Ogilvy (or Ogilvie) who was aged 35 when he died in 1840. He married Euphemia Robertson in 1835, and is stated as being buried in 'Alexander Robertson's Lair', whom I am assuming was some relation of his wife. Everyone else seems to have history that is traceable back to 1600's, but this guy seems to have just dropped out of the sky. It is irritating in the extreme. Scotlandspeople have no record of him even being born.
I thought something from the MI may shed some light on him - or even any info!
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
J
