Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Surrey residents date unknown

Thanks for your replies.

I was wondering about the photographer and whether they would go door to door in an area offering to take photos. I seem to have a few like that, where the house is the prominent feature.

1870s would fit with my family from Surrey. I know that my 2x great grandparents were living in the Alms houses at Fetcham in the 1881 census. What I'm not sure about, is what the Alms houses looked like at the time.

Thanks for all your replies.

The newspaper articles looked interesting. I went further back in time and found one in the Islington Gazette dated 12 Jul 1888, where they mention a name, Police Constable Stephen Chapman 61 G.

I've found a family tree for a Stephen Edward Chapman, born 1860 Bermondsey, on Ancestry, which includes a photo in later years. Unfortunately his features do not resemble those in my photos and his family tree does not include any names I'm familiar with.

I've found a record in the National Archives Discovery which gives his dates of service in the Met from 20 Apr 1885 until 25 Apr 1910.

"Stephen E Chapman, warrant number 70563. Joined on 20 April 1885, and left on 25 April 1910. Last posted to G Division as a PC."

Maybe my PC 61 G joined after 1910.

I also do not recognize the name Alfred Ross, but I'll double check. Thanks again for all your help.

Another family photo of unknown people.

Can anyone give an approximate date. I know I had ancestors living in the Fetcham area of Surrey up to the 1880s, but nobody I think from Redhill. Thanks.

It's been a while since I've posted on here, but I've recently been given some family photos of an unknown policeman.

I've contacted the Met museum and they've confirmed that he was in G Division, but that it was not possible to identify him from his collar number 61.G, as the numbers got reused when a policeman left.

I've also got another photo of the same gentleman in army uniform. He looks older in this one. Unfortunately there isn't any identifiable insignia on the uniform. I can just make out the letter B (I think) on his shoulder strap.

Both photos are Post Card size. The Police photo has "Photo by J. Bender & Co., 179-181 City Road E.C. 40 London Road S.E" printed on the back.

I'm hoping that someone can help date these photos please and maybe give me a lead as to how I can identify him. Thank you.

Kent / Re: Venus Family

I'm not sure about Elizabeth, but she could have been the wife of Richard Venus. There are baptisms in St. Mary Cray for their children, Michael (1802), Anne (1804) and Catherine (1807). There isn't a recorded baptism for David (b.1812) who is living with Elizabeth at Reynold's Smith in 1841, but he could have been there son, as Michael was also living at Reynold's Smith, Orpington in 1841 (and 1851) with his wife Matilda Quiddington.

Kent / Re: Venus Family

While looking for the ancestors of my Venus family from East Peckham, I came across the will of Thomas Veness, Wheelwright of Marden, dated 1 July 1806. In it he refers to his sister and brothers: Elizabeth Honeysett wife of William Honeysett of Lamberhurst, Sussex, Wheelwright, Benjamin Veness of Pembury, Kent, Wheelwright, John Veness late of London, Wheelwright and Joseph Veness of Saint Mary Cray, Kent, Cordwainer.

There is also the will of Thomas' wife Mary dated 25 February 1821, which mentions Benjamin Veness, Wheelwright of Pembury and Joseph Veness of Crayford, Kent, Cordwainer.

Could this be the Joseph Veness who married Elizabeth Turner on 2 Mar 1794 in Eynsford. I've also found an entry in the London Gazette of 14 Jul 1801, which mentions a Joseph Veness of Sevenoaks, Shoemaker, who was discharged from debtors prison. As cordwainer is another word for shoemaker the profession and location fits, as the children of Joseph and Elizabeth although baptised in Eynsford, were born in Sevenoaks (non-conformist BMD).

Thomas Veness of Marden also mentions his mother in his will, Elizabeth Parker of Heathfield, Sussex. Elizabeth Veness married Edward Parker on 9 Apr 1779 in Heathfield, Sussex.

So possibly the parents of Elizabeth, Thomas, Benjamin, John and Joseph were Thomas Veness and Elizabeth Card who married on 14 Jan 1752, Wartling, Sussex. The children having been baptised in Brightling, Sussex. There were 2 younger siblings Hannah and Samuel, but both died before their first birthday, but the others match.
