Sussex / Glebelands Shoreham by Sea
« on: Tuesday 14 June 16 17:38 BST (UK)  »
Grace Eleanor Davis died at Glebelands Home, Middle Road, Shoreham by Sea in 1969.  She had given birth to a son in the East Preston Workhouse (Northview) in 1934 and admitted to Greylingwell Asylum shortly after. Was discharged many years later and sent to Northview. As she was institutionalised most of her adult life and had no family (son was sent to a childrens home in Chichester and later adopted) assume her burial was the responsibility of the local authority.  Which
local authority should I contact and does anyone know which cemetery she would be likely to be buried in?  Any help would be appreciated, many thanks, Enamay

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Guernsey Marriage Lookup Woodbury/Ferentz
« on: Tuesday 01 November 11 21:40 GMT (UK)  »
Is there a central index for Guernsey marriages similar to English BMD site?  Looking for marriage of Ida Ferentz to William Woodbury between 1891 and 1911.  The Woodbury family were from St Sampsons and Ida was single working as a servant in St Peter Port 1891 census.  1901 census shows her as wife of William Woodbury, she is back in England as a widow on 1911 census.  Pretty sure they had no children.  Any help much appreciated.

London and Middlesex / St Helena's Home, West Ealing
« on: Tuesday 01 November 11 21:30 GMT (UK)  »
St Helena's Home,51 Drayton Green, West Ealing was a female reformatory for "fallen" women run by Sisters of Mercy.  I have found an ancestor listed as "inmate" on 1911 census - are there any records of births/adoptions etc available anywhere?  The home has now been demolished.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Huntingdonshire Lookup Requests / Re: thomas butler of little stukeley

Margaret and David, thought you might like to know that I have now received copy death certificate for Mary Butler died 31 Oct 1838 aged 43 wife of William Butler, farmer of Little Stukely, she died of consumption.  William and Mary had 13 children in total and William must have found it hardgoing after her death.  Have found on Australian Convict Transportation Register that following William's trial on 19 Oct 1840 (2 counts of horsethieving = 15 years transportation on each offence) he was put on the convict ship "Duncan" which left Sheerness 16 Dec 1840 and arrived Van Dieman's Land 18 Apr 1841.  There were 259 male convicts boarded and 259 landed so we know William did survive the journey.  But considering his age of 47 when he left England and his sentence of 30 years, he probably didnt last long - I would expect him to have died within 10 years.  Enamay

Dear Mshrmh thank you so very much for your help - absolutely fantastic.
Didnt think of looking at Channel Islands census.  Should now be able to get printouts and a marriage certificate for her.
I had not been able to find Ida on 1891, 1901 or 1911 census.  Her father Francis was as you say a ships steward but I've checked the post office employment records on Ancestry and couldnt find him.  He must have been at sea at the time of the 1881 and 1891 census and, as you say, died in 1899 being knocked down and run over in Southampton docks.
Again, many thanks, Enamay

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Ida Ferentz born abt 1865
« on: Sunday 18 September 11 21:55 BST (UK)  »
Ida Ferentz is on Southampton 1871 census as born Antigua.  On the 1881 census she is a 16year old servant in Croydon, Surrey says born Portugal.
Parents = Francis Ferentz and Sarah Ann nee Wren.  1871 census Francis says born "Maidam british subject", on his marriage 1862 he says father Francis Ferentz, labourer.  Ida married a John Moss and lived in London, she died 1952.  Cant find marriage to a Mr Moss.  Family lore says she spoke Portugese.  Looked at online history of Antigua which says large number of Portugese arrived in 1840, Francis was born 1841.  Does anyone know where Maidam is?  Any help appreciated
