Kent / Easts Cottages, Hadlow - Solved
« on: Tuesday 18 June 19 10:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  does anyone know how can I find out where a particular house was situated in a village?  I am trying to find Easts Cottages in Hadlow & wondering if anyone could enlighten me as it was where my Grandad was born in 1905.  It definitely says Easts & not Oasts, although I did try Oasts just in case.

Any help greatly appreciated, thank you  :)

Solved - A search through the newspapers on Find My Past revealed the location as the High Street.

Hi Andrena,

Sorry for the late reply.  I managed to trace Robert Williams back to Donegal where he was born.  He was a Musician in the 94th Clare Militia having enlisted on 26 Jan 1855. His daughter Elizabeth was born about 1856 but sadly died at the age of around 33.

Trying to trace them from Newport to Kent is another matter & have so far been unable to trace his wife Mary but I think she may have been Mary Ann Spencer, also from Ireland.

I hope this helps.

Do you have any other details? There is more than one base in Portsmouth.

Sorry to gatecrash this topic but I would like to thank Roy G for helping me with another piece to my puzzle.  You interestingly stated  "I appreciate that if they were Travellers, Romnies or Gypsies they may be difficult to track down on censuses, but if you are lucky, they sometimes can be found where a fair or travellers gathering is being held.  Look for an address that isn't, which has been tacked onto the last few pages of a census.  eg In a cart by the side of the road"   I came across exactly that  in a census while looking for my 3x great grandparents who very little is known about.  I naively assumed it meant they were sleeping rough, sounds ridiculous now especially as my great aunt had told me she thought they had some sort of connection to a fair! I now have the motivation to carry on digging!

Is it possible for a soldier to have been in the 57th Foot Regiment in Dublin in 1850 & then gone on to be in the 94th Clare Militia in Newport, Wales in 1856?

I'm trying to trace my Great Great Great Grandad Robert Williams roots & it looks likely that he was a Bandsman in the 94th Clare Militia in Newport in 1856. I have found a Robert Williams who was a Bugler with the Royal Engineers Depot (Cos.35-38), service no 5789 in Chatham in 1861 but don't know whether this one ties in with either or neither of the ones in Wales or Dublin.

There is a birth record for an Elizabeth Williams in Dublin in 1850, daughter of Robert Williams of the 57th Foot Regiment. Elizabeth Williams was my Great Great Grandmother.  Any help/advice would be most appreciated  :)

Many thanks!

Robert was a brickmaker could his connection to the Victory hotel/inn been the building of it?? We think it was Battle rather than Hastings but could be either.
