If you are serious check to see if he had a will - possible if he knew he was dying.
You could also check legal documents about custody, did he have custody of his children at the time of his death?  For someone so young and possibly in the army the kids may have been living with some one else for all their lives.  Find that family name, check city directories and move through the years.  Time consuming.  Most newspaper archives available on the web you might have more luck there.
Also if you can find the obit track any siblings mentioned.
50 years is along time and with both parents dying young there may not be a happy reunion in the offing.
Failing all that try Lost and Found on Craigslist Vancouver.

Mary Tonner born Dumfries 1842-52 by other census data, John born Dumfries (father Daniel, mother Martha Deacon) same period.
Both families were of Irish descent but living in Dumfries circa 1820 onwards.
I found them on the 1881 census but lost them afterwards and you try searching John and Mary Riley!

I had hoped some of their family might be researching them.

Yes this is the only online link I can find to Tonners, think they/we have been misspelled.  IGI has a christening for a Bridget Tonner in 1780's in Raphoe.  Would love to find the will but only the index has survived.
The next reference I have is in Scotland 1841, where they are born in Ireland.
The family says they were from Down.

Female relative married John Riley in 1877 and had a son John Edward born 11 pm, 25 Dec 1880 in the stables at Carstairs House.

1881 Census has him as Carriage Hirer, 45 St Leonard, Carstairs, Lanark but after that can't locate them anywhere.
Children I know of were James and John Edward Riley, born 1878 & 1880 Carstairs.

Yes the FamilySearch is the family.
But Bernard death cert in 1879 Annan has him as 74 (filled out by grandson, who knew Bernard's parents names and occupations) so his birth date is questionable.  John Straney was an Irish weaver and possibly came over after 1797 uprising.  They were from Down.  The family also has 3 daughters dying in Carlisle 1803-10 so  Margaret and Bernard may have been the only survivors.
Interesting about referring to Thomas as step-son, hmmmm, Ann's maiden name was Carr so maybe Bernard had suspicions about his parentage????   I like to think they had a sense of humour and kept the census taker on his toes!
