Thank you for replying Jim
yes as far as I know correct McGarva at that time, later on in late 1880's it was sometimes recorded as McGarvie, there are a lot of McGarva/ McGarvie's in Wigtownshire Scotland and as Robert's father James was listed as a carrier, I can only guess he travelled between Ireland and Scotland.

Down / where in Down ?
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 21:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello I am trying to find out where my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather, Robert Mcgarva was born in 1824. He died in Old Luce Wigtownshire Scotland in 1885, age 61. His father was James McGarva who was a carrier, his mother was Jane Scott. On the 1861 Scottish census for Old Luce it states he was born in County Down Ireland, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Stirlingshire / where did she go ?
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 20:46 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace what happened to Sarah Dotchin born 1908 in Bannockburn, she was the daughter of my Gt Grandfather James Gordon Dotchin & his 2nd wife Lizzie Dotchin nee Shields. The family story goes that she left home, after a row, saying she was going to London, in 1924 age 16 and was never heard of again, my Gt Grandfather moved many times, being a miner and died in 1954 in England , having never heard from his daughter again. I have looked on free bmd can see no marriages or deaths that match up, where do I go from here? please.

Hi Bunnygirl my Gt Grandad was James Gordon Dotchin parents Sarah Dotchin and James Gordon, he was born in the workhouse in Chester le street in 1874, he had a brother John and another Edward who died as a baby. James did marry but not in England as it says on my grandad Dempster James Dotchin's birth certificate but just before his brother John was born when Dempster AKA James or Jimmy was 2yrs they married in Glasgow they would have lied to cover up illegitemacy,  2yrs later he married again in same register office in Glasgow to his second wife by whom he had a daughter Sarah. James Gordon dotchin died in March Cambs in the early 1950's
