Hi,Niamh......yes,the name was a big clue! Lol.       Here's we're I'm at...will have to see what i can remember,we're down at our daughters in Galway, for the new year, and i dont have my notes with me!   Leo and his siblings(Curran)were b Carlow and Kildare.         Mick.,Charlie.,Elizabeth Margaret(Rita).,John Joe,and Mary Catherine(Kathleen)were all b above what is now,Smyths pub in Newtown......Frank.,Patrick Dermot,Dan and Ann,twins who died a few hrs old,and James LEO,my hubby were all b Kilkea.Castledermot.Kildare.                   Leo's mum was Margaret Mary Aughney, who married John Curran. They both died from TB when Leo was small, and he was reared by his sis and her husband in Galway.   Margaret Mary's dad was Michael Aughney(this is we're I have to rem who was m to who,cos BOTH his grandads were Michael)...think Michael Aughney was m to Catherine Byrne......in 1901 Irish census, they were living in Newtown. Also living with them and their children, was Michaels parents.,John Aughney,b.c1818,and Alicia Aughney.,b.c1823. Have found that John Aughney m Alicia Raftry.       Can't go any further back than that, cos records,I think ,began 1820 and John was b a couple of yrs before that,so will have to rely on parish records!     I am in touch with a man in England who is related to Aughneys of the mill. If you want to email me,my address is....leoandelaine9@gmail.com.        Hope to hear from you soon.....Elaine.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1901 Census look up for Joseph Lever
« on: Saturday 12 October 13 00:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi...what they sometimes did back then was,if they didn't have brothers or sisters as witnesses, then sometimes the clerk or registrar, would ask one of his relations to stand as witness. They were prob given a few pennies, which would come in v handy!
They even got people off the streets to witness the marriage.
Looking my ancestors up,in Lancashire,I came across the same people, time and time again!....they must have been on a good number!

I sent an email to the clerk(?)at Bagenalstown RC Church....I had rung her  a couple of months ago when we were in Carlow/Kildare. She said it wasn't possible for me to look through the records, but that if I emailed her with the name, she would look as soon as she had time. I asked her for the baptism of John Aughney,b.c1818...... The online records only start 1820, so my only chance of getting any further back,is from the actual records kept by the Church. I haven't heard anything back yet...hope she got my email!

I write regularly to Sue who wrote this article....there were only 6 families of Aughney in the whole of the 32 counties in 1852(Irish times)..all were in Carlow.
As well as myself and Sue,there is a lady in Cork, and a man in England, all looking Aughneys, and we're all looking different ones!
I am looking Newtown,.dunleckney.,..Carlow Aughneys.
I think John Aughney,b.c1818 may have been baptised either in Newtown Church or Bagenalstown, but I can't find it online.

If you go to Lancashire OPC site, click on Parishes.,click on Prescot.

You will find lots of burials of people with the address Whiston Union.

There are records for Prescot.,Whiston.,Burtonwood,and more dating from 1625 to 1900.

I am tracing my grandmothers' paternal line,Whitfield, and have got lots of info on this site.

Hope this is of help to you.

Lancashire / Re: Whitfield family of Burton-wood
« on: Thursday 21 March 13 03:15 GMT (UK)  »
My gt gt grandad was John Whitfield.,b.c1818,in Burtonwood....Died Aug.1868,in Atherton.
He married Margaret Collister.,b.c1828,in Parr.,St.Helens.....Died 21st Sep.1900.
They married in Prescot,c1845

In 1851Census,they were living Parr Flat(?) with children,Peter(3) and Ellen(5mths)

In 1861Census,they were living in Lovers Lane.,Atherton, with children,Peter(13).,John(7).,William(3)and Elizabeth(under 1 yr).....no mention of Ellen, who would have been around 10yrs old...had she died?

1871Census,has Margaret as a widow,living 22,Lovers Lane.,Atherton,with children,John(18).,William(13).,Margaret(9).,Thomas(7.......my gt grandad)and Sarah E(1)

In the 1881.,1891Census,family has moved to 88,Mealhouse Lane.,Atherton

Margaret is dead in the 1901 Census, but daughter Sarah E(now married to John Richard Halloran)is at the same address, with her husband, her sister Margaret Whitfield, and nephew Thomas Whitfield,b.c1890(is this the son of Margaret?)

1911 finds the family has moved to 28,Elliot St.,Tyldesley,with daughter,Mary Emma(6).
Margaret and Thomas still live with them.

I am trying to find:-
1. The parents of John Whitfield.?
2. Was Thomas the illigitimate son of Margaret?...she was still down as single on 1911 Census, aged 49.
3. Did first daughter,Ellen,die young?

If anyone recognises any of these names, and could help me, I would be very grateful.

Elaine
