How very interesting--thank you so much for this, Elaine. It is disconcerting that the surname mutated so late. Are we 10th cousins?!

Hello, Harry. I am afraid that I have not done any research on the name Hildrew--in fact I have never seen or heard that name. What do you know about its origins?
It could be a variant spelling--but I am not sure: the name Hildyard, for example, seems to have completely different origins.
Here is the link to the Rootsweb page:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,551109.0.html where you will find a download link to my Hildreth history.
best wishes

hi Linda! The posts in the Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland boards were just to say that I had written a paper. Here is the link, and when you get there you will find another link to download my Hildreth history.
Let me know if it works.

I have done a lot of research on the Hildreths of the north-east and I attach a 15 page paper discussing the origin and spread of the name and so on, which I hope will be of interest.
I would love to hear from you if you are researching this name and have got back before about 1750.

Hi! I have done a lot of research on the Hildreths in the north-east and put most of it in a 15 page paper which you are very welcome to have if you e-mail me. It has got stuff on the possible origin of the name, parishes where hildreths are found and so on.
Buckinghamshire and London seem to be the only other two areas where there were concentrations of the name--and from at least the 1600s. I would love to know what the link (if any) is!
How far back have you got?
Would love to get in touch
