Staffordshire / Re: Looking for Information on a Robert Oxberry (Oxburry) from 1757

Paul & Carol
I will have a DNA match to Carol as I also descend via James. My ancestor was Thomas Oxberry (1822-1901), a son from the first marriage. James was quite prolific with 13 known children born to his two marriages (9 and 4 respectively). I concur with your surname comments as a study of Robert 'the potter' shows many variations of surname spelling.
My DNA report shows a strong connection to Norfolk/Lincolnshire but after 20+ years of study no ancestor has yet been found from that area. My research into Robert Oxberry led to the Oxborrow (and variations) in that area of the east of England and therefore I wonder if the Burslem, Staffordshire connection was just a stepping stone. Keeping an open mind.
Regards, Roger

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: can you find in 1901

I note that your post is dated 2008 but I have some info on Thomas Oxberry b:1840 at Haverton Hill, baptised at Billingham, Co Durham and who moved to York with his parents William Oxberry & Elizabeth Jordan. He married Hannah Burnett nee Benson 05 Nov 1859 at St Mary's, Castlegate, York as "Thomas Oxberry Jorden". They had 6 known children. Hannah was buried on 24 Dec 1891 at Castleford and Thomas remarried to Jane Fletcher nee Goodall in 1896. Hannah's death is registered under "Hannah Oiberry". Jane's death was registered Jun qtr 1910, York.

Thomas William Oxberry born 10 Sep 1882 was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Oxberry. Elizabeth married Harry Greenwood in 1884 Pontefract so perhaps Thomas William was not welcomed by his step father hence living in York with his grandparents in 1891.
Thomas William possibly married Emily Bruce 1900 York but there is confusion. On the 1901 Census a "Thomas Oxberry" appears living with his grandfather in York as a 'postman' but with an incorrect birth place of York and a status of 'single'. There is a second record in Sheffield of a "Thomas W Oxberry" declared age 18 and 'married' living at 4 Horner Road and also a 'postman'. He is a boarder.
RG13/4355/130/38/225.

George Oxberry (1867-1935) enumerated as "Oxbery" in 1901 at Dringhouses, York:
RG13/4444/19/3/145

James Oxberry (1872-1925). Enlisted in West Yorks Regiment in 1892. Regiment Number 3120. Possibly serving abroad hence missing in 1901 but further research is needed via his regimantal papers and the Regiment's whereabouts. There is a suitable death for him in 1925 Hong Kong and a Passenger list for a 'James Henry Oxberry" aged 52 departing Liverpool on 09 Jun 1923 SS Sarpedon. He is declared the 'Proprietor of the N E Hotel, Castleford'.

You probably have all of this by now.

Robert Oxberry (1757) is my 4 x gt grandfather and I am also searching his origins. I noted a burial on 26 Aug 1782 Burslem of Maria Hawkesberry (wid) and wondered about a possible connection due to Robert naming his first 2 daughters Maria (or similar). I also considered that if this was his mother's burial then it may have precipitated his move from Burslem.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: Alexander Kirkbride

I stress again that I have not found them. The information that I have given is based on the evidence that I have for ALL Kirkbrides in the area. Alexander K's birth and parents are unknown. Nothing has been found.
However if you research ALL the Kirkbrides then certain conclusions can be drawn into a theory. But that theory needs to be proven.
Certainly I believe that there were 2 Bernard Kirkbrides baptising children in the Askrigg area between 1728 and 1750....and thereby lies the problem. Most researchers see the marriage in Askrigg of Bernard Kirkbride 'of Rigg House' = Ann Metcalfe on 01 May 1728 and then 'lump ALL subsequent baptisms of children of Bernard K under one family. It frustrates me that people do not check for proof. Many Kirkbride Trees are incorrect.
But if you look closely at the Parish Register and the individual baptisms it becomes clear that there are 2 Bernard K's. And further there is a burial for an Elizabeth K 'wife of Bernard K' on 29 Oct 1748 at Askrigg. NOTE this is the same day that a Milner Kirkbride 'son of bernard K' was baptised !!!! Hence my suggestion of Elizabeth Milner as a possible wife of Bernard.
Now I am looking for a marriage circa 1730.....and the missing baptisms including your Alexander K.
Please do not think this is proof.....it is merely a suggestion that needs to be followed up.

To solve this mystery we need evidence. Please note in my original posting I wrote "However I can find no record of his baptism nor a marriage for his parents" so I am a little surprised that you now ask where I found the birth and names of the parents.....

Alexander K who married (1)Agnes Hodgson 12 Sep 1768 (2)Mary Webster 13 Oct 1792 was born circa 1745. I believe he was the son of Bernard K & Elizabeth Milner. However I can find no record of his baptism nor a marriage for his parents.
I also believe that he had brothers James bap 1734 & Thomas circa 1736 (again no bap found) are the fore-runners of the Kirkbrights from the Pateley Bridge area.
I also have another possible brother named Edmund K born circa 1743 (birth year taken from burial record age at death) who I researched extensively due to a Kirkbride marriage to a CLAYTON. I have loads of stuff from more than 10 years research on this family.
There are many missing Kirkbride records for the period 1730-1750.
