The Lighter Side / Re: Another howler from Ancestry
« on: Sunday 18 September 11 12:00 BST (UK)  »
Making jokes out of other people's spelling mistakes and typos is not funny at all.

In fact, it goes against 'netiquette'.

"Messages and articles should be brief and to the point.  Don't
wander off-topic, don't ramble and don't send mail or post
messages solely to point out other people's errors in typing
or spelling.  These, more than any other behavior, mark you
      as an immature beginner."

Internet 'netiquette', drawn up in 1995

Of course the real joke is that this thread is about someone's intolerence of someone else's mistakes !

Actually, I'm not intolerant of other people's mistakes, we all make them. My original post finished with a "grin" icon and was posted on The Lighter Side board - it was meant as a light-hearted comment.

Unfortunately there are some very pompous, humourless people on here who are too full of their own self importance and have their heads up their own backsides. If I'd realise that posting a glib comment about Ancestry was a hangable offence, I would have thought twice about it.

Anyway, I won't be coming back to this forum, I've got better things to do with my time.

Anyone (whether an Ancestry member or not) can volunteer for the WAP.  And if you think transcribing is easy, then feel free to volunteer !

Where did I say that I thought transcribing was easy?

I agree that, on the whole, they've done a great job and I am grateful to everyone who's put the work in, but I get so frustrated sometimes that I'm paying a monthly subscription but often can't find the people I'm looking for because of a glaring transcription error (Caroline Dodge transcribed as Cawline Dodge being another I found last night).

If it's true that the records were transcribed in China then that DOES explain a lot. Names that would be familiar to someone whose first language is English are probably guessed at by someone for whom it's not. It's a shame, but something I'll have to live with I suppose!  :)

I was looking at my Dodge relatives on Ancestry last night and found that one of them was apparently born in "Not Captized, London".

When I looked at the actual census form, she was born in the City of London and in the "deaf, blind" column at the end had been written "not baptized".

I seriously wonder about the Ancestry transcribers sometimes!  ;D

Hi Valda,

Many thanks for all that info, that's brilliant. Yes that is the correct marriage so if her father's name is John then the 1841 Census you found is probably spot on. Sipson is/was only a village so it would be too much of a coincidence if it wasn't the right one. By the way, Sipson is right by Heathrow Airport and there was some talk a few years ago about bulldozing the village to make way for their third runway. Not sure what the state of play is at the moment - probably on hold (I hope).

Thanks also for the info about the other Keens. I'll have a good look at it all tomorrow when I'm a bit less tired - I've been on the computer all day and my eyes are glazing over!  ;D

Many thanks once again, best wishes
Louise

EDIT: I've just found the marriage cert on Ancestry - they had her name indexed as Sarah Renn so that's why I couldn't find it before. I'm completely thrown that Henry's occupation is given as cheeesemonger. CHEESEMONGER? On the Census returns, his occupation is always labourer or carman  ??? But his father was called William and he had a sister called Caroline so they both fit....

Does anyone know if the baptism records for Longford/Sipson are on line anywhere? I'm trying to find the baptism of Sarah Keen, born about 1832-1834 and I haven't been able to find it on Ancestry, FindMyPast or FamilySearch.

She is on all the Census returns, except for 1841 (there is a possibility for her in Hammersmith in 1841 but it still doesn't give her parents' names so not much help!). In 1851 she was a servant and not with her parents either. She married in 1856.

If anyone has easy access to the Longford/Sipson parish records and could have a look for me, I'd be really grateful.  :)

Many thanks.

Louise

The Lighter Side / Re: BBC TV "WDYTYA?" Series 9 Episode #3: Sebastian Coe

Can anybody remind me which show from previous years also had a celeb who had slave owning ancestors?

It wasn't the Colin Jackson or Spike Lee episodes.

Thanks

It was definitely Ainsley Harriott because I saw his episode fairly recently while I was house-sitting for a friend who has Sky TV.  Carol is right in saying that Moira Stuart had slave or slave owning ancestors too. I'm not sure about Hugh Quarshie, but I remember him going to an African village where his ancestors had been very important (sorry, can't remember exactly).

The Lighter Side / Re: How good is your memory?

My memory is atrocious - I have to have everything written down and I refer back to it all the time.

I bought some Gingko Bilboa tablets which are supposed to help improve your memory but.... well I don't really need to add the punchline, do I?  : ;D

So well done Rishile, I'm very envious  :)

I hate the word "lodger" or "inmate" on a census because I'm never sure if the person I've found is "mine" and as he or she is living with random people it doesn't give me parents/spouses/siblings names!  :'(
