I'm pretty certain one of the families I am researching was in Manchester in 1851.  If anyone has any of the 'unfilmed' 1851 census indexes could they please check for Sidney Stead (born c. 1820 in Dewsbury), wife was Mary, children Ann, Sarah, John & Mary.  Many thanks.

Hi Dorris,

Not sure if it's a problem at my end but I couldn't see any text in your message, just the quote from CP ...

No ASHMAN found in Paglesham 1841   !?!

Regards   CP

Hi again CP,

I wasn't expecting that  ???   I suppose the name might have been mis-spelt or mis-transcribed, unless they'd moved away from Paglesham and then returned later.

Thanks for checking anyway.

Best wishes

Ian

If anyone has access to the 1841 or 1851 censuses for Paglesham in Essex would it be possible to check for anyone with the surname ASHMAN and in particular William ASHMAN (born c. 1825).

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ian,

In 1851

St Augustine, Bristol
HO 107/1951
Cannons Marsh
ASHMAN Elizabeth 42 Mariners Wife Lavington
Mary 14 Bristol St Augustine

There is also this possibility for Joseph perhaps mistranscribed as unmarried?

St. Philip & Jacob, (Out) Bristol
HO 107/1954
Page 19
ANVIL STREET
NEWTON Mary 50 Baker Widow Wells
ASHMAN Joseph Brother 40 unmarried Waterman Wells

Debbie  ;)

Hi Debbie,

Many thanks for the lookup, much appreciated.  I'm as good as certain that Elizabeth is his wife but it doesn't look like Joseph was around as he was born in or around Canewdon in Essex which rules out the one at Anvil Street.  With him being a marriner I suppose he could have been at sea.

Best wishes,

Ian
