Somerset / Re: FOWLERs of Cudworth and Cricket St. Thomas, Somerset

Thanks Peter,

this will be most helpful in chasing the Fowler side of the family.

We are all clear of COVID.  It seems to be one thing Australia has managed reasonably well.

Best wishes

Geoff

Hi ,

I am descended from Robert Dare and Mary Fowler who married at Cricket St T on 28.2.1781. I am having difficulty establishing who Mary's parents were. Does anyone  have any information that may help?

Was the Sarah, who was a witness, her mother or sister?

Kind regards
Geoff.
Canberra

Hi Peter,

Many thanks for the info., the text documents came over OK...

I have some additions on the Cricket marriages, from FreeREG:

28.1.1774 James Fathers of Crewkerne m. Hannah Fowler otp by Licence, witnesses John Hilton, Charles Sh???
20.9.1780 Henry Dyer of Church St Michael m. Elizabeth Fowler otp by Licence, witnesses Robert Fowler, Robert Dare
28.2.1781 Robert Dare of Hawkchurch m. Mary Fowler otp by Licence, witnesses Sarah Fowler, Francis Kentesber

...and one where there's just a Fowler witness -
6.7.1816 Samuel Warren m. Mary Syms, witnesses William Glyde Fowler, Charles Guppy Smith

I also have Baptisms at Cricket (from PRs):
Sarah 1765, Henry 1769, Mary 1771 -
all children of Henry & Ann Fowler

and Burials at Cricket (from PRs, except * from FreeREG):
1743   Henry Fowler   son of John & Hannah
7.8.1744   Hannah Fowler   wife of John
1764   Henry Fowler   son of Henry & Ann
1767   Susanna Fowler   dau of Henry & Ann
(Susanna was chr. 9.5.1767 at Winsham)
2.12.1776   John Fowler   of Horne in the parish of Chard
26.11.1781   Henry Fowler
21.4.1795   Mary Fowler   of Grange Farm, Thorncombe*
15.9.1795   Hannah Fowler   of Chard

As it's so close, I also had a look at Crewkerne Marriages (on FreeREG again), but so far it's just a list of names, no witnesses etc. Did you find anything there that looked useful?

Next time I am at Somerset Records Office, I will have a look to see what else they have for Cricket & Cudworth other than PRs - if there are any Land Tax or Poor Rate records etc., I'll see what I can dig up...!

Hi

I never really know how to use this site or if I am asking questions in the right place.

I am looking for information re Richard Rowe Wicks who married Esther Healy in 1791 St Mary, St Marylebone, London.
The name Rowe seems to be past through the family line and I was wondering who it belonged to, his mother or grandmother. I know this was common to have the names from the maternal side kept in the family by using them as middle names.

Any assistance greatly appreciated

Hi
My husband has just reminded me she was of the Catholic religion. Does this help at all? He also believes they owned farming land somewhere by a river. I know pretty sketchy. I guess there are many rivers in Ireland.

Thanks

Hi
I am trying to trace my husbands great grandmother who was born in Roscommon 1849. We believe she had siblings but do not know who they were and do not know the names of Anne's parents though we believe her father's name may have been James. She migrated to Australia in 1870's. Am looking for any info on Anne or who her family were and what they did at Roscommon.

Thanks

Diane

Dinah's father went by Louis Henry a bit like Abraham Hyam called himself Hyam. Louis was actually sent out as a convict to Tasmania, have traced his exploits. However would like anything on Esther's side

yes am aware of Dinah's first marriage and loss of her child who hung himself trying to get out of his cot. Very sad indeed. Actually read the inquest info on it.

Thanks Dee, you are right. I am so stoked I have been stuck on this for so long and now I have some sort of idea if the family. I ahve been able to go back on other sides of the family all in England to late 1600/early 1700's but the jewish side had me stumped.

I am also trying ti find Richard Robert Stewart who married Sophia Utting Sutch in Melbourne. Richard was married before and lost his wife and 2 children but don't know their names or what happened. Don't even know if it happened in England, on the way out or in Australia. I have a transcript of the marriage certificate for Richard and Sophia and have Richards father as Joseph and mother as Hannah but cannot read her surname. Believe he was born Norwich 1814. He was widowed 1845 and married Sophia 1854.
