The Common Room / Hearth Tax Records - Online and FREE!
« on: Monday 25 July 11 15:50 BST (UK)  »
The website Hearth Tax Online has surname indexes and transcripts of hearth tax documents (early modern - c. 1660s) for a number of counties including County Durham, Kent, Surrey, and the North, East and West Ridings of Yorkshire.

The indexes and transcripts can all be downloaded, completely free of charge, in PDF format, and the site also contains statistical information, parish maps and other resources for the featured counties.

There are a number of other counties, including Essex, London and Middlesex that are listed as "coming soon" so it might be worth keeping an eye on it or signing up for the e-mail newsletter.

Looks like it could be a really useful source of material.

There is a fairly new website called Hearth Tax Online which has downloadable surname lists and transcripts for a number of counties.

There is also a Centre for Hearth Tax Research, and its website has a lot of useful information about the context of the tax and where to locate further information.
