Devon / Re: George TIPPETT or BENNETT...confusion over names

Hello Julie,
Thanks for your post. I don't know whether the person you mentioned would be linked...my ancestor George Tippet was born 1854...his first child was born in 1880 or 81.
His own father, another George, might possibly be still having children in the 1870s...but I can't work out who that George is...and whether he is in fact a Tippet at all or perhaps a Bennett.

Hi Jacqui,

Thanks again for your interest. That's probably my tree you found on the website as I had traced these Howards as the most likely to be the family of Mary. Was hoping to find a link there but nothing much came up other than shoemakers in the wife's family.
Back to the drawing board!

:( Well the marriage certificate has arrived....and I'm still none the wiser!

My great great grandfather George Tippit married Mary Howard in 1877 ...registry office so I think there is some non-conformist element here too. His army entry crossed off c.ofe. and put a non-conformist church instead.
George lived in 24 Looe St Plymouth (but wasn't there in 71 or 81 as far as I can see) and Mary in 7 Looe St Plymouth...again not in 71 or 81.
His father is another George Tippit...shoemaker
Her father is William Howard...carpenter.
The witnesses are Elizabeth Shephard and Celia Gomer or Gorner or something similar.
I'm having no luch so far with wills.

Any other ideas would be more than welcome!
Thanks
Judith

I'll have a go at tracing some wills Marg. I hadn't thought of that...but why do I get a  suspicion that he will be cut out of any wills?
Still waiting for the marriage certificate...hope it comes soon!

Thanks for the idea Scouse Boy...but I know where George and Mary Ann were in 1881. They were in Malta ...he was in the Royal Engineers. His son Cyrus George was born there and they returned to Plymouth in 1885. I have his army records which confirm all this.
Unfortunately these records don't tell me anything about his origins other than that they say he was born in Stoke Damerel in 1854 and that he was called Tippett or Tippitt.

I've wondered similar things Marg...though that seems a bit grand for a humble bootmaker.
However...now it gets even more complicated!!...George Tippett's son who was registered as John Henry Tippett Bennett married a Florence Luscombe. I have traced her family back. Her father was Moses William Luscombe...and her mother Mary Hannah Bennett...and low and behold Mary Hannah's father is a John Bennett and his parents were Henry Bennett and Harriet Tippett! These are a family of boot and shoe makers with names such as Cyrus appearing in lists of children. This all ties in nicely except for the fact that throughout all the census entries George Tippett maintained the Tippett surname and always said that he was born in Devonport. The Tippett Bennett family of bootmakers are from Kenwyn Truro! I'm pretty sure there must be a connection but I just can't find the missing link!

It's like getting to the end of a jigsaw and finding a piece missing...very frustrating!
Any ideas are more than welcome

Hello fizz.
Thanks for your interest. That is indeed the right family. I also have other census entries..even found George in the 1911 census...but all say that he was born in Devonport and I can't find any record of birth to match it!

I have sent for his marriage certificate and am now waiting in anticipation....hopefully neither George nor Mary Howard will lack fathers and hopefully there will also be some traceable Bennetts or Tippett amongst the witnesses!
(Think I'm being a bit optimistic here though!)

Thanks again

Europe / Re: Italian great grandfather...where did he come from?

Thanks again to all who responded.
I will dig out the marriage certificate and see if there were any italian sounding witnesses. I suspect not as I think I would remember that.

I did have a look into the family he was living with but didn't come up with much. I'll have to dig a bit deeper there.

Thanks for the link to the liverpool history project.
