The Common Room / Re: There are currently 50% off deals on Findmypast

Yes Bearkat that is true especially if people havent been using the sites, its an easy place to make cutbacks but I am surprised that they havent got Ancestry at the very least in your area as this site seems to be the preferred option for County library services. We are fortunate here in Oxfordshire to have both still.

We do still have access to Ancestry which we are grateful for.

To lose the newspaper archive plus FindMyPast which also has newspapers is a blow.

Yes I agree FindMyPast for me is the preferred option as I am now back into the Parish records and find most of them are on FindMyPast and not Ancestry. I also love the newspapers too. Sorry for your loss :'(

Yes Sprintex it looks like they have access at the library. In Oxfordshire you dont need to register for a FindMyPast account when you use the library edition, normally you can just go straight in from their computers. In Oxfordshire we cannot access FindMyPast from home without paying for a subscription.  Best thing to do is to book a computer if you need to and then ask the staff how to access Findmypast when you get there :)

Sprintex if you find you can get access locally then I would take a USB stick with me and download the images or alternatively take your email address and login and then you can either save the images to the library computer and email them back to yourself or I believe that the Ancestry Library edition allows you to just email direct from the website. Good luck  ;)

LizzieL, yes it seems to be for new users but as I said in my earlier post if you set up another account using a different email address then it will let you get the 50% deal. The only irritating factor is that of course the records you have already sourced are not in your saved searches but as your old account should still be accessible then this isn't much of a problem. Certainly the link here in the newsletter that Zaphod99 posted worked for me

sprintexec, if you live near enough you may also want to consider whether your local library has free access to Ancestry or FindmyPast or both before jumping into a subscription. It will give you the option to try before you buy if you like. Our local library has access to both on a library edition which is sort of an edited version of the paid for subscriptions but does cover all the 1939 register and also the Censuses and Parish records of both sites. ;)

Brilliant thank you, I have been waiting for a decent reduction for a couple of years now. ::) Just to say for others that if you have an email address registered with them already then it doesn't seem to let you use that for the reduction. I have had to use a secondary email and it went through with no problem. ;D ;D

Well that is very useful information Biggles and I will certainly pass it on to her. I am pleased you discovered your  biological father as a result and the inclusion of your familial family is also nice to hear :D

Thanks Biggles for another vote for Rootsmagic. I will pass it on.

No, I havent gone down the DNA route myself and don't intend to in the near future. I have had extensive dealings in my professional life with DNA results produced by Government departments for Court cases to know that even they are fallible. Let alone companies which make a profit without the proper checks and balances being in place.

I suppose that Family History is now two separate entities. Do you want a biological tree based on DNA or do you want the "family tree" based upon who actually was responsible for bringing the child up and who they, the child, regarded as their parents or step parents? At the moment I am happy to go down the latter route with the accompanying documentation and historical implications. I know I have a couple of illegitimate lines in there already some of which I know who the parents are and some I dont.  Maybe sometime in the future one of my descendants might want to look at the DNA version when the results are a little more accurate.  ;)
Cheers
Jackie

Thanks Nick for the advice re Ancestry etc. I have never put a tree online myself as I didn't like the very very small print they had buried in their terms and conditions ( and may still have) which said that whatever was on there was "their property". I prefer a standalone program which I can check against Ancestry/FindMyPast from the outside if necessary ;)
