Armed Forces / Re: 10th Foot Reg - where do I go from here?
« on: Saturday 20 May 06 18:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi Valda - thanks for such a quick response!
I have been unable to find a civil marriage in England; found a possible in ireland but reached another brick wall there.
I will try the military marriage route.
I have tried searching online for attestation papers, so far with no success; I will be in the UK for a few days next month and might manage a visit to the National Archives - could i achieve anything worthwhile in a few hours?
Cheers
Carolyn

Armed Forces / 10th Foot Reg - where do I go from here?
« on: Saturday 20 May 06 17:13 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the origins of my ggf, Daniel Flynn who served with this regt.
Info I have to date is:
Death certificate - 1886 listed as retired Sgt.
1881 census - recruiting Sgt for volunteers in Chipping Campden
1871 census - with the regiment in Aberystwyth
1864 in Capetown - birth cert. of his 2nd child

Any pointers and help will be more than welcome!
Thanks
Carolyn

Hi everyone, I need a bit of help to push me in the right direction.
I have some references from the National Archives database and want to know if I can get further into them on the web.
I am trying to locate my GGF, Daniel Flynn, born in Ireland but served with the 10th foot (1st Bat.) from the 1850s to mid 70s.
I am hoping that I can get details of his birth and marriage from his enlistment papers.
The references are: WO/WO12/2788 - 2814
Any suggestions or advice will be more than welcome.
Thanks

I am sure there are lots of Browns out there hitting the same wall in the mid 1800s!
I have a birth certificate for my grandfather in 1869 which give the address as 1 Robert St, district Strand, sub-district Charing Cross.
His parents were Honorah Kelleher and James John Joseph Brown.
I have tried the 51, 61 and 71 census with both names and struck out.  Honora'h parents (according to family notes) were Joanna Millar and Jeremiah Kelleher - no luck in the census with them either. I know Honorah was baptized on April 24th 1836 in the church St Mary Assumed into Heaven, and an address of Warwick St. Westminster is also written down, but I don't know if that is the church or the home.  Our family seems to have been RC with both Gparent's.  I checked the Westminster RC diocese website but couldn't find a church of that name - HELP?!

Armed Forces / Re: Irish Volunteers in South Africa?

Thank you, Hackstaple, for your reply which pointed in me in the right direction albeit by a rather circuitous route.
I apologise for the delay in replying but I took a break from all this for a month or so.
The 10th rgt of foot (The Royal Lincolnshire) raised a 2nd battalion in Ireland in 1858 which was in S Africa during the right period for my family history.
My new question is would I be able to find any birth or marriage details from my GGF's army record, and what info would I need to get hold of this?  I will be in the UK next month and might be able to squeeze in a visit to the GRO.Thanks again.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Holy Cross Church

I am new to RootsChat and your enquiry interested me - not that I have any photos but my grandmother was married in this church in 1905.
What names are you researching?

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Anyone seen adoption papers?
« on: Friday 06 May 05 23:59 BST (UK)  »
I am a little late joining this conversation, but I have only just joined RootsChat.
I adopted 2 children in Scotland in the early 70's, both as infants. The information we were given by social services on finalising the adoptions was very limited and had no reference at all to the mothers' or fathers' names.  The birth certificates we/they used throughout childhood, and now as adults were the shortened version with no reference to birth parents.  We also had the copies of entries in the Adopted Childrens Register - again with no mention of birth parents.
When my daughter reached 17/18 she was able to access her original birth certificate which had only her birth mother's name.  I was fully supportive of this move and together we have reached many brick walls in trying to "locate" the mother - very difficult as she was a young immigrant.
Previous "chatters" are right - ONLY the adoptee can access any information regarding birth parents.
Good luck to all of you with your searches!

Westmeath / Marriage Record - Mullingar
« on: Friday 06 May 05 05:23 BST (UK)  »
I found a record (in irish origins)of a Feb 1859 marriage in the Church of Ireland, Mullingar for Daniel Flynn and Mary Anne Potter whom I believe are my g-grandparents.
Would the actual church record give information about parents and places of birth?  Is Church of Ireland Catholic or Protestant?

Is there any way I could get someone to check this for me,  or tell me who to contact.  I am fairly new to this game and Canada is a long way from the Emerald Isle!
Thanks
