Berkshire / Re: Somerscales fish (and chip) shops in Reading
« on: Wednesday 09 April 14 16:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
This may not add much to what you have, but my mum and dad briefly managed a Somerscales' Fish and Chip shop in Queen's Road, I think,  for a few months in 1946/7.
I was a small boy then and attended the C of E primary school nearby. Wasn't the company head office head office  situated in Friary St. or vicinity?  I remember the Head Manager - Mac - an expansive gentleman who kindly gave generous tips to such as myself.

The shop was a pokey little place and part of the living accommodation was in a gloomy basement. My mum always claimed that it was haunted!  True enough it seemed spooky to me.
They then moved to the company's shop in London Rd. Newbury - just about the time of the big freeze of 1947. They remained there doing very good business - the only fast food in town - until the earl 50's, when they left Somerscales and went to Henley.
Does that fill it out a bit?

Hi,
Just coming back since last time in case you have more info on your DOYLE'S - I'm looking for a MICHAEL JOHN with a JOHN as his named  father. Possible that the family had a small shop. Time line somewhere after 1900 and up to 1926 or so - then he left Ireland. Possible family troubles suspected,  since no contact following. Thanks.

Such a long shot, but here goes: Michael (John) Doyle, born 1908 - so he claimed.
Could he be in the year range for Michael, son of Michael and Bridget?
Do you have a Michael unaccounted for in your ancestry?
My Michael said he was born in North Leitrim, but he could have been muddying the trail for whatever reasons. He died in England back in 1984. Probably left Ireland in the 1930's. No documentary evidence and no contact with family.
We believe he worked as a labourer on the railways in Leitrim, as he later did in England.

Thanks.
Would that be the 1912 Michael Doyle birth at  Laheen,Drumdoo you had in mind? Caomhin.

AAh! Many thanks for the response, but all that has already been done, with no result. It's desperation time now and messages in bottles.
I suspect that the answer lies in the talk around the fire about the old times.
Thanks again, your suggestion appreciated. Caomhin.

Looking for Michael Doyle, maybe born around 1908. Claimed Manorhamilton area birth, but no evidence. Well, he could have got into trouble? Worked on the railway at Dromod and probably Manorhamilton too. Came to Britain with the beet hoeing gangs and eventually settled in Hampshire. Ended his working life as a railwayman. My dad, but I know almost nothing of him. Any 'lost' members in your Doyles, please?
