Devon Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 census STOODLEY
« on: Monday 31 January 11 06:27 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you, Crisane, for that very prompt reply. The family proves to be not the one I am researching, but that is all helpful as I now know that I do not need to pursue that line. Thanks very much again, Jim

Devon Lookup Requests / 1851 census STOODLEY
« on: Monday 31 January 11 06:02 GMT (UK)  »
Would some kind person please look up for me the following:
Rachael Stoodley, age 10 or 11, born in Jamaica who apparently is listed as a "daughter" in the 1851 census for Devon. I would be most grateful to receive the details of where she was in Devon and the membership of the household, particularly the parent(s).
Thank you, Jim

Somerset Lookup Requests / 1841 and 1851 census: STOODLEY
« on: Sunday 14 November 10 06:10 GMT (UK)  »
Could some kind person look up for me the 1841 and 1851 census information for Benjamin STOODLEY?
He was born about 1777 in Crewkerne and I think he resided at his brother-in-law's house in 1851, probably still in Crewkerne. Information about other Benjamin Stoodleys would also be useful.
Thank you, jimpam

The Common Room / Florence Amy STOODLEY
« on: Wednesday 13 May 09 06:42 BST (UK)  »
Florence Amy Stoodley was born in Teddington, Middlesex in 1887. She became a teacher after graduating from Royal Holloway College, University of London. She taught at Sunny Hills School, Bruton, Somerset from 1911 to 1915 and at Colston’s Girls School from 1915 to about 1924. What became of Florence after that? Can anyone help with further information about her? jimpam.

The Common Room / Re: Latin assistance reqd please
« on: Monday 01 December 08 01:44 GMT (UK)  »
Passage 1 reads:
Thomas Campbell, Knight in the second year of the reign of King James [i.e. knighted in 1604, the king being James I] citizen of London, alderman and Lord Mayor of the same city, the most just and wisest of men. This resting place has been dedicated to his perpetual memory. He was twice happily married and from his first marriage were born 6 sons and 7 daughters. From them to be sure there were 39 grandchildren. ["iude" poses problems, not being a recognisable Latin word; without seeing the original inscription, I interpret the phrase to be "ex inde," meaning "from them, thence"] All citizens held him in high regard in both private life and public office. When he had achieved the age of 78 years, with the mourning of his family and all honourable men, he yielded to his destiny on 13th February, AD 1613.
Passage 2 is showing how rusty my Latin is. If I can come up with a passable rendering, I shall send you the results of my efforts. Jimpam.

Many thanks for your valuable information about Agnes Watson. Can I impose further and ask you to try after 1881? Jim Stoodley

Renfrewshire / 1891 census - STOODLEY, MCLEOD
« on: Thursday 04 October 07 11:42 BST (UK)  »
Benjamin Stoodley married Agnes Watson on 19 Sep 1862 in Middle or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrewshire. According to the 1881 census, their adopted daughter was Henrietta McLeod, born 1872 in Greenock. I would like to know what became of these three people. Would some kind person look up the 1891 and 1901 censuses to see if they appear there?
