Hello Jeremy

Sorry to take so long getting back to you. Got stuck with Thomas and left him for other things. Since your message have looked again at my Burtonshaw family to tidy it up.
Arthur Burtonshaw was my great grandfather, his eldest daughter Elizabeth Marjorie (always called Madge) was my grandmother. I have never heard of any family tree done by Arthur or anyone else. Have traced Thomas through his gas industry work, usually through the census returns and the places that his children were born, including a Coroner's report on the death of his son in law in a gas explosion at Bloxham (Oxon).

Will look again at the census return of him with the Jarvis family - cannot trace his parents, have you any ideas?

Jo

Thomas was also my gg grandfather, and I seem to be on a similar quest to you to trace the family history. Could you get in touch to see if we have information useful to each other.

On the "Stockport" entry - not aware that Thomas ever lived there, not out Thomas anyway, there were other Burtonshaw's around the Macclesfield area involved in hatting, which was also an industry in Stockport, so that Thomas may be connected to that.

There is a story in the family that Arthur Victor, one of Thomas's son's completed the family many many years ago - well that's the story from my father [Donald] (and originally from his father- William Thomas, Arthur's nephew and Thomas's grandson). I would like to get in touch with any descendants of Arthur to see if (a) it was true and (b) if so who has it!! - Would save us all a lot of effort!

Regards

Jeremy Burtonshaw (currently in South Cheshire)

Hi again

Elizabeth Wheeldon chr. 09/06/1805 Hognaston. Father William Wheeldon, mother Hannah. There was also another Elizabeth Wheeldon, born the same year in Brassington. There is a very good web site, can't remember full address, but covers the Wirksworth area. Brassington, Carsington and other villages all come into this area.

Thanks DS, have just managed to find the entry, it took 2 attempts and thank you for your copy of the info. I've looked into many Burtonshaws in Cheshire and Yorks/Lincs but think it maybe the Yorkshire side of the country. Loads of Jarves/Jarvis births around the same area in Lincs, must presume Thomas's parents died, will keep at it!

Thanks to you both. :)
I think I can knock Stockport on the head, perhaps he thought it sounded a better place to originate from. There is an Owston near Doncaster but think I'll have to go for the Lincs Owston Ferry because of the census entry
I think DS has the the right Thomas in 41 & 51 although the women appear to be different. In 1841 it looks like Mary (maybe Joseph's sister?) and in 1851 Ellen. Can't find the connection between the 2 families yet.

I presume the 1871 census Westminster is in London. I'm using commercial internet site to find the census entries and despite several attempts I cannot find this entry so would be grateful for any info you have

Many thanks
Jo

I have 2 problems with my g-g-grandfather Thomas Burtonshaw
Think he was born around 1836/37 as 25 in 1861 census and stays consistent throughout. In 1861 census he gives Ouston Lincs, 1881 he gives Owston Ferry Lincs, 1891 it's Stockport Lancashire and 1901 it's Stockport Cheshire. His father was William Burtonshaw, musical instrument maker. Can't seem to pin down a William and Thomas in 1841 or 51 as father and son.

The other problem is I can't find Thomas and wife Mary in 1871.
By this time they had the following children: Alice Ada; William; Emily; Thomas. Leila was born 1870 in London area and Laura 1872 in Leavesden Herts. Thought they would have been in one of these places but can't find them.
Any ideas very welcome, Thomas is driving me mad!

Presume you know about the wishful-thinking site with Snelston MIs. There  are Roe names but not Thomas.
www.wishful-thinking.org.uk or just google Snelston MI's and you get that page.

My g-g grandparents are buried in Snelston so I've been a couple of times.
