Waterford / Re: Waterford Power family (1840s-1910s)

Thank you for the help. I'm sorry that I haven't been faster to reply.

My grandmother had some of these names written down but it is wonderful to see the actual records firsthand and to know where to look for more.

Waterford / Waterford Power family (1840s-1910s)
« on: Wednesday 29 June 16 11:41 BST (UK)  »
I’m hoping someone might be able to help me learn a bit more about a specific Power family in Waterford. I’m looking for more information for four siblings I’ve located in the 1901 and 1911 Irish census:

James Power (born abt 1841 –)
Jenett “Janes” Power (born abt 1842)
Patrick Power (born abt 1844)
John Power (born abt 1846 – died in 1907)

According to anecdotal family resources, their father’s name was Michael Power. I would really like to find some evidence of their births or their mother’s names. The three sons were alive and listed as farmers on the 1901 census in Carnglass. Patrick was still alive and living with a nephew in 1911 in Carnglass. John died in 1907. I cannot find any sign of James. The sister married a man named Patrick Callaghan and was still alive as of 1901 and living in Clashnamrock. I cannot locate her after this. I know the siblings were all Roman Catholic, spoke Irish and were unable to read or write. I would really like to find out what the siblings’ parents names were for certain and any other record for the four of them during their lifetime as I know very little about them, or if there are any other concrete siblings I could research in to.

Id say the first is probably late 1930s. I'm just going off of her clothes, hair and the general look of the photograph (stark contrast and that ratio strike me as similar to other photos I've seen from the '30s).  The latter two I'd say were taken in the 1940s. As another poster pointed out, I believe the car in the second photograph is much more 1940's style. Additionally, the woman looks quite a bit older around the eyes. Also some facial drooping. As for the third photo, it also strikes me as 1940s, though I'm genuinely unsure where it falls concerning the other two photos.

Completely agree with China. The dress is very distinctly 1870s, though the hair is not. I'd say the phot quality also points to the late '70s or early '80s. Very interesting photograph, do you reckon their siblings or maybe a very young married couple?

I think China's estimate is about spot on. The woman's whole look is very "Gibson Girl" (hair, high waist line), which fell out of favor at the start of WWI. It very well could be an American photograph. It's really hard to tell without a stamp or some photographer information.

That said, this raises a curious question for me. Did English women do the whole "Gibson Girl" look as well or was that strictly an American thing?

Caernarvonshire / Re: Morfa Bychan 1880

Anyone think there's a chance that John Sr. was "John Emrys-Jones", he married an Annie Jones, and Emry's was John Sr's mother's maiden name?

Thanks, guys, for the leads. I’m still sorting through the stuff you all posted.

Sorry about that, I didn’t know there was more than one Morfa Bychan.  The 1911 census lists Annie’s birth place as “Morfa Bychan, Caernarvonshire”. John’s is listed as “Pentre, Glamorgan.” The son “John Emrys Jones” on the 1911 census is Rev. John Emrys-Jones. Not sure when it started, but he didn’t use Emrys as a middle name but part of a double-barrelled surname his wife adopted and his children inherited.  He is listed as “John Emrys-Jones” and his wife as “Helen Marise Emrys-Jones” in the England & Wales Death Index. His children are still alive.

I don’t know if Ceridwen ever used the surname Emrys-Jones legally though. In the England & Wales, Marriage Index: 1916-2005 for her first marriage to a man named Kenneth L’esty, she is listed as “Ceridwen” under the section for the surname Jones. She was still Lesty when she came to America in 1947, but her second marriage shortly after her arrival lists her parents as “John Jones” and “Ann Jones” (note this spot is supposed to list the mother’s maiden name). Her American death certificate lists her parents as “John Emrys” and “Ann Jones”, but I think this was a mistake. Double-barrelled names were not very common at all in America and I just figured this was a clerical error. Ceridwen’s obituary lists her parents as John and Ann Emrys Jones if I recall correctly (no hyphen).  Both John and Ceridwen’s sons recall the grandparents as “John and Ann Jones”I believe they lived again in Pentre during at least the 1940s. Neither one died until sometime after the 40s.

There is something strange to the whole mess, however, as nobody’s really been able to track down anything further about John and Ann at all, so I am beginning to wonder if the surnames were actually switched or something? Maybe it was John Emrys and Ann Jones? Or maybe they were both Jones and the Emrys bit came in somehow else. The 1905 Wandsworth marriage is really interesting because the note I have saved from the England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 for Ceridwen indicates she was born in Wandsworth in 1907.

I might be mistaken, but I would guess this probably dates a tiny bit later than 1905. It looks about WWI era to me. Again, though, I might be wrong.
