JT Heeley is my great great grandfather, my great grandfather was sir denison miller on my mother's side.
I got the info on the moana from a citation from the Australian medical Gazette from july 20 1910....the citation also says while in seymour........"On one occasion it was learnt that bushrangers intended to stick up the paymaster; the doctor carried the cash through safely, the paymaster being stuck up on his journey"
We don't have a lot of info in our family on the heeleys or his wife, hence my interest!

No worries...I have being trying to track down where he ran his medical practice in Seymour, Victoria. The website below says that he was actually a medical officer for the construction of the rail line which runs from Melbourne to Wodonga (the first half leg to Sydney).
Perhaps that is why we can't find where he lived.

I found the medical practice where he operated from in Young .....he was also Mayor of the local Council twice and a freemason....2 more leads on his life and character.

cheers

John Theophilus Heeley was my mum's great grandfather. One point missed in the discussion is that he was a ship's doctor on the Moana which sailed the Sydney Vancouver route in the early 1900's...a few years before he died. This is a quote from the Australasian medical Gazette from July 20 1910.

I think that he went to Nevada because he was having some sort of legal trouble with his business partner, Dr.John Daly Walker  in 1852. He ran a pratice with him in 31 Anglesea Road Woolwich. Also said that he ran a pratice with his uncle, Dr. Joseph Heeley just before he went to Nevada..... but I don't think that this is correct.

He was also a successful squatter in Wakatipu in NZ and made lots of money with sheep...then he sold them for cattle and they all died from pleuro so he sold up and went to Victoria.
