Ayrshire / Re: Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland - Mary Anderson dob c.1848
« on: Monday 08 April 13 04:54 BST (UK)  »
Thanks ever so much Ambly and EV.  I can be so hard over here in Australia tracking down accurate details of one's ancestors.

Mary ended up Marrying John Justins who was also on the "Sultana" with his brother George.

I believe Mary and John married in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 25th April, 1882.  I have ordered the marriage certificate from NSW BDM.

Mary and John had three children, Arthur, Edward and Marion.  They ended up in Western Australia and the family had an association with Katanning in the Great Southern of WA.  My wife is a Justins and her family are from Katanning.

Mary and John went on to live long lives, Mary about 78 years and John about 82 years.  They are buried in Karrakatta Cemetery, Karrakatta (a suburb of Perth), WA.

Thanks again good people.

Ayrshire / Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland - Mary Anderson dob c.1848
« on: Sunday 07 April 13 03:17 BST (UK)  »
I believe Mary Anderson was born to John Anderson and Janet Anderson (nee Heir) in about 1848 and her place of birth may have been Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.  It is understood Mary emigrated to Queensland, Australia in 1864 aboard the "Sultana" ex Liverpool.  Mary would have been about 16 years of age.  I don't know whether she was accompanied by her parents or their fate.

If anyone could help me with Mary's exact birth date and place and the fate of her parents it would be most appreciated.

I understand Rachel may have been born in Trevethin, Monmouthshire, Wales.

I am seeking to identify her exact place and date of birth if possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cornwall / Re: Samuel & Mary Ann Parker
« on: Tuesday 04 September 12 11:38 BST (UK)  »
Thank you to all you good people for your help.

Mary Ann's husband Samuel did travel to Australia ahead or her.  Mary Ann and her three daughters Mary Ann jnr, Elizabeth & Jane joined Samuel in Clunes, Victoria, Australia.  Samuel died shortly after in 1868 pre deceasing Mary Ann.  Mary Ann remarried.

I am now in possession of a certificate (2nd marriage) for widow Mary Ann Parker to John Greet Willcocks at Clunes, Victoria, Australia on 4th December, 1869.  On this certificate it provides her father's name as Richard Russell? Hunting? (?=hard to read) and her mother as Mary Ann Stephens.  Her 2nd husband also predeceased her.  I have also obtained her death certificate but it appear she died a lonely death in a hospital and her parents, two marriages and children are listed as unknown.

Cornwall / Samuel & Mary Ann Parker
« on: Sunday 02 September 12 14:07 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to locate any information for Samuel & Mary Ann Parker of Cornwall
Samuel Parker:   Possibly born Gunnislake, Cornwall about 1824
Mary Ann Stephens? Russell?:   Possibly born Gunnislake, Cornwall about 1825

Married ?

Children:
Mary Ann Hunting? Parker:   Possibly born Gunnislake, Cornwall about 1844
Elizabeth Parker:   Possibly born Gunnislake, Cornwall about 1846
Jane Parker:   Possibly born Gunnislake, Cornwall about 1848

I have seen the family listed in the 1851 & 1861 UK Census.

I have some information that indicates Mary Ann Parker with her three daughters emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia arriving 12th March, 1864 aboard the "Naval Reserve".

I do not know what happened to Mary's husband Samuel Parker.

The daughter Jane Parker married William Henry Willcocks 1865 in Clunes, Victoria, Australia and is my family line.

Any information, birth dates & places etc would be beaut but in particular what happened to Samuel Parker would be greatly appreciated.

Lanarkshire / David McCullam & 99th Regiment of Foot
« on: Tuesday 06 March 12 10:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everybody

My GGG Grandfather was David McCullam.  (I understand his father was also David).  His death certificate mentions he was born in Glasgow about 1820.  Research here in Western Australia suggests he joined the 99th Regiment of Foot at 14 years of age.  He married Ann (Nancy) Wilson at Elland, Halifax, Yorkshire in 1842.  They had several children.  It appears the two eldest children may have been born in the UK.
Elizabeth c.1845 born UK?
Martha c.1850 born UK?
Selina 1851 born Bunbury, Western Australia - Confirmed by Western Australia birth cert (David as father is recorded as a "Soldier of the 99th Regiment")
Ellen c.1854 born Yorkshire - recorded on Western Australia death cert (Yorkshire not confirmed by any other source and not able to locate West Aust birth cert.
Jane c.1857 born ?
Walter 1859 born Perth, Western Australia
Arthur  1863 born Perth, Western Australia
Esther 1866 born Perth, Western Australia

It is believed David came to Australia as a guard on a convict transport ship accompanied by his family.

At some time it appears David McCullam transferred from the 99th Regiment of Foot to the 12th Regiment of Foot.  The family remained in Western Australia with David recorded as a soldier of the 12th Regiment, later a policeman and died at Albany in 1901.

You can see the research available to me over here suggests the first two children Elizabeth & Martha were born in the UK, the third Selina in Western Australia, the fourth Ellen in Yorkshire, Jane ?, with the remaining three Walter, Arthur & Esther being born in Perth, Western Australia.  I am desperately trying to identify where and when Ellen was really born (as she is my line).  It seems strange 2 born in the UK, 1 in W. Aust followed by 1 in Yorkshire and the last 3 in W. Aust.  I guess there is a chance David & his family returned to the UK with his Regiment and later was posted back to Australia with the British Army.

The three main matters I am trying to ascertain in order of importance are:

Ellen McCullam's correct birth date and place (this is my line)
David McCullam's correct birth date
Ann (Nancy) Wilson's correct birth date

Is any good person out the able to throw any light on the matters for me.

Antrim / James McKeown who emigrated to Australia about 1864
« on: Tuesday 16 August 11 13:34 BST (UK)  »
My wife's 5 times great grandfather is James McKeown who is believed to be born County Antrim, Ireland about 1808.  In about 1835 James married Henrietta Murray also of County Antrim.  Their eldest daughters Mary and Margaret emigrated to Western Australia aboard the "Hamilla Mitchell" from London.  They married and established themselves in the Colony.  Henrietta and the rest of the children including James Jnr. joined Mary and Margaret by emigrating aboard the "Hastings" which departed London 17/12/1864.  However, James Snr. is not listed on the "Hastings" passenger list and I can not find any record of how or when he came to Western Australia.  Is any good person out there in research land able to shed any light?

PS:  I have reasonable material on the McKeowns once they arrived in Western Australia which I can make available to anybody who desires same.

Thanks

London and Middlesex / Re: Looking for Bridget Maloney daughter of Stephen Maloney
« on: Saturday 06 August 11 10:44 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Keyboard86.

I wondered that too.  But what disturbs me is that Bridget's marriage certificate describes her father Stephen Maloney as a gas fitter, so you would think he had been around a while and perhaps enough to get a fix on him.  But I am darned if I can find anything that relates to him.

In any event something substantial must have happened in Bridget's life to make her take that big step to emigrate to Australia at an age of about 20 years.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and with a bit of luck somebody out there might be able to shed some more light on Bridget and her family.

Thanks again

Chris
