Ruskie, thanks for the side by side maps. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find Clapham House and several other large houses that existed in 1871 aren't shown either. Perhaps they had been demolished?

Thank you MonicaL - that's fascinating. I'll enjoy exploring the map and when I can get down to London again I'll enjoy wandering around there.

Hello, I've just come across your query about Spring Gardens, Lambeth and wonder if you have any further information? I realise it's been some years since you posted but my 4x great grand uncle's address was 2 Spring Gardens in the 1851 census. At this time I imagine the address was quite prestigious as he was Moses Merryweather, the famous fire engine maker. By 1872 he was living at an address in Lambeth - Clapham House, Clapham Common. Searches have turned up a pub/hotel at 642 Wandsworth Road but as he was still the owner of a wealthy company I'm not sure if this is the right place. I'd be interested to learn more about your investigations.

Thanks all. That map is fantastic. From what I can make out there were no, or very scarce, oyster beds around the Tees estuary.

I'm looking at the 1880s rather than modern period. I know they were common off the south coast but haven't heard of them being found off Hartlepool.

Can anyone tell me whether oysters and/or scallops were ever caught off the Hartlepool coast?
Thanks. Louise
