Possible from the Holborn Union exam books, 16.5.82
Mary Davis, 59
Husband George Davis, 63, at Highgate (the infirmary)
Mentions previously being at Longs Buildings.
It's a bit disappointing, says (in) St Lukes 40 years.

This is interesting, will take a look. 40 years in St Luke's sounds about right!

I also have George dying in January 1884 so the other comments now support this, with Longs Buildings as his previous residence.

Just cannot find that marriage - I'm starting to think they perhaps didn't marry or Mary was married previously and Taylor is not the name under which she was married!

Thanks Debra, rules that one out.  :)

Noticing that Mary does not seem to know where she was born, if they did marry, it may not have been in London?

Hi Maddy - the census details you posted are the ones I have. Mary's birthplace does seem to jump around a little but where it is given it seems to be in London - but anything is possible. My guess is that it is probably around St Luke's - this family, including other branches - did not move around much staying pretty close to the Golden Lane/Whitecross Street area.

Unfortunately two common names here for those who like a challenge!

Birth certificate of my 3x Gt Grandmother Matilda Davis - born 1840 at 90 Golden Lane, Whitecross Street, London - gives her parents as George Davis, shoemaker, and Mary Davis, formelry Taylor.

I can find them on various census returns but cannot find a marriage between George and Mary (sometime Mary Ann).

Matilda is the first child as far as I can tell so presuming the marriage is on or before 1840.

George I am pretty certain was born in 1820 in Blue Anchor Alley and Mary around 1821 in St Luke's.

Can anyone find a likely marriage that I can then investigate further? There are plenty of George Davis marriages to a Mary Ann but none with the surname Taylor - although i could just be going cross eyed with them all.

Thanks in advance  :)

Hi

May not be your man given the dates of the children's birth, but there is a marriage of a Richard Eley to a Mary Finch on 7 Nov 1787 at St Thomas, Dudley.

Could be a second marriage or maybe a son (if he was born earlier than the children you already have?)

Not much help I know....

Scrolling through ancestry.com for the past 2 hours and London Lives 1690-1800.

Thanks amondg - I will re-visit Ancestry, don't recall these ever coming up when I've looked before. Appreciated.

Cannot prove it but the children in the workhouse 1813
Elizabeth age 8 years
Alexander age 6 yrs 6 months
John age 4 yrs 1 month
Sarah age 1 yr 4 months

are they the children of Alexander Tilley and Elizabeth Dukes married 11 June 1804 at Wapping.

His parents could be *Alexander Tilley married Elizabeth Polton 1 March 1779 at St Dunstan Stepney.
possible child Alexander born 1780.

Then one more generation
Alexander Tilley who married Elizabeth Pollard 19 August 1749 at Fleet.
In her deposition re Poor Laws she says they married 1749 at Fleet and she has a son Alexander age about 30

They had
Elizabeth bap 8 July 1750 at St John Wapping
*Alexander bap 15 December 1751 at St John Wapping

I believe that the workhouse children are the family I am looking for as everything ties in - sometimes that's the best you can do!

The additional information is really helpful - can I ask what the source is of the information on the two previous generations?

Thanks so much for helping  :)

May be no connection but an Alexander Tilley b 1766 was buried 6.2.1825 at St Giles without Cripplegate

Not the most common of names😀

Similarly, there's a marriage at Wapping, 11 June 1804
Alexander Tilley + Elizabeth Dukes

Both single, of the parish, and they marked.

Alexander William and William Henry were born before Alexander Tilley and Sarah Humphreys married.
Both baptized at St Giles Cripplegate (1827, 1829)
Just an observation!

Thant's an interesting one for the parents! Will investigate further - thank you.

On the first two children, yes, I had noticed that. Both baptisms give mother's name as Sarah so on the balance of probabilities and in the absence of another marriage for Alexander senior I'm thinking it is the same parents.

No - the burial register has the wrong year.  There is a burial for a 17yr old Walter Henry Turner on the same page showing a burial on 13.1.1866 but he died March qtr 1867.  Think they forgot to acknowledge the New Year hence 1866 when it should be 1867

Yes - I can see that now  :) Interesting that the burial record gives his home address when he died in the workhouse though - or perhaps a relatives address ( i have a few mentions of Blue Anchor Alley).

I can update that - thank you!

Now just to see if there is any birth/parents information.  They were in the workhouse as children and it does say discharged with parents - but annoyingly doesn't list them  :(

Alexander Tilley aged 67 was admitted to the Holborn WH 4.1.1867 & died 6.1.1867

Now I'm totally confused!! Starting to think there is more than one Alexander Tilley.......
