i think you may be the first person to ever mention the person i am hunting for on the entire internet!
there is a story my grandmother and her sister told me of a william robinson from belfast, his brother (or family) founded robinson & cleaver. apparently he ran away to scotland, joined the 42nd regiment (blackwatch) and that's what took him out to india.
don't know what info you have but anything is gratefully received, i've been hunting this man down for 16 years!
